Therapy dog killed, mistaken for a wolf

On Monday, a trophy hunter killed a therapy dog, right in front of her owner, because he apparently thought that she was a wolf. According to the Sacramento Bee, Kaoru was on a hike with her owner, Valley Calderoni, when a shot rang out.

Calderoni described the horrify moment to CBC, “I look up, and I see my dog, and she was bleeding. All I can see is my dog getting shot — her face, her eyes looking at me with absolute disbelief.”

According to Calderoni, Kaoru (Kah-oh-roo) was a rare Tamaskan. The devastating moment when Kaoru was shot is described in detail on the Facebook page for Canine Valley, a BC Dog Daycare Center:

Today, like any other day, I took my beautiful girl with a teammate and nine other dogs on a regular hike. The hike was amazing; the dogs were so well behaved, training went beautifully. As we were finishing the hike, we were putting the leashes back on the dogs. We were going up a little bank onto an old forest road. I already had two dogs on the leash when I heard the bang, it was so loud, my instinct made me crouch down, then I looked, and I saw 10 feet in front of me my dog shot. She screamed, and looked at her wound with disbelief and then looked at me with the absolute feeling of betrayal. I ran towards her as she stumbled down the road where she collapsed. I tried to save her, I held her, I just knew it was not good. I did not want her to suffer, and I told her “just go, just let go baby girl”. She died.

Adding:

A hunter, a trophy hunter killed my dog. I told him ” the only thing that can make this better would be if you never, ever take another life again”. What kind of human can look in a scope at such beautiful creature and murder it? This man took my dog’s life because he thought she was a wolf surrounded by seven other dogs and 10 feet away from my teammate and me. We could have died. I hike in that location with kids all the time, could you imagine if a child had to experience that or worse if he had hit a child? I can’t believe that Kaoru is gone, that someone could do that. I am in pain and I want to use this intense pain to help stop this, we can take a stand, we can change things.

Conservation officer Kent Popjes has interviewed the hunter, who is described as “cooperative,” and determined that the shooting was simply an error of judgement.

A fundraiser, to train another survive dog and change laws, can be found at this link.

      • W, killing a dog is far from “an accident”! They shouldn’t have been hunting anywhere near a hiking trail!

      • That was NOT an accident!! The dirty piece of trash DELIBERATELY took aim and fired at another living and breathing creature, ending her life without any regard for the OTHERS who surrounded her, whether they were the other dogs or the HUMANS 10 feet away!

An “error in judgment” is: driving too fast; putting two different colored socks on; taking the wrong turn; forgetting an appointment; even cheating on your significant other.

It is NOT taking another life. That’s FINAL. Get it?

      • Seriously? You’re comparing accidents that we may have caused to somone killing a dog? You must be a friend or relative to the POS trophy hunter.

      • If I were there, I would insist on pressing charges for animal cruelty AND attempted murder (on me, since I could have easily been shot).

There was a case of a hunter shooting a Mom wearing white mittens in her own yard, in front of her twin toddlers…… Mom died right in front of her babies…..

“Sorry, my bad”….. is no excuse in a shooting……. if you pull that trigger, you had better be absolutely certain of your target…… shooting in a nature park with hikers all over the place or in a residential neighborhood is WRONG on all levels!!!

  1. Shooting animals for sport is always an error in judgement. All you are is a serial killer venting on animals instead of people. Just shoot yourself.

  2. A true killer hunter mistaking a dog for a wolf is a crock of shit a killer hunter knows what wolfs look like any killer would fucking know u sick vile fuck I don’t believe this crock of shit just another trigger happy vile killer u sick barbaric vile bastard u should pay for killing this dog poor dog my heart and thoughts go to the owner another walker fuck!!!!!!

  3. YOU CAN’T EVEN ENJOY NATURE BECAUSE OF THESE EVIL SCUMS LIKE THIS GUY HAVING HIS GUN AS HIS POWER, A COWARD POS MONSTER FROM HELL THAT IS POISONING OUR PLANET! JUDGMENT DAY COMES, SOMEONE WILL SHOOT THIS FILTH AS HIS KARMA AND ONLY THEN HE’LL KNOW WHAT PAIN AND DYING FEELS LIKE BEFORE HE MEETS SATAN. GOD WILL NOT FORGIVE YOU FOR WHAT YOU DID!

  4. My heart breaks for this dog and her people! How stupid and careless!! This idiot was shooting were people and pets hike and he wasn’t punished!!!!? What’s wrong with the law enforcement!!!??

  5. “…the shooting was simply an error of judgement.”???

So is running a red light, speeding, texting while driving.. etc.. but if they result in injury or death, THEY ARE FELONY LEVEL OFFENSES!

This som’bitch had NO RIGHT TO FIRE, lacking proof-positive confirmation of his target – AND MUST PAY THE PENALTY FOR SUCH NEGLIGENCE!

Would I receive such a similarly dismissive chastisement, were I to mistake this assh*le for a bear and take HIS life???

    Rest-in-peace, precious Kaoru…

  6. The right to bear arms means you have to be responsible and know when to use your weapon. Some people just like to kill. Their weapons should be confiscated when something like this happens, and they should have their license revoked. With rights come responsibility. I have a license to carry and I try to be responsible when doing so.

  7. RIP Kaoru. I’m so sorry you had to die at the hands of some POS who shouldn’t have had a gun in the first place. There are no “mistakes” when it comes to shooting an animal.

  8. You asshole how can u do this kill yourself you are an evil creep and I wish it happens to yo. Poor animal he deserved to live you deserve to die I hope you rot and die. god bless the beautiful doggie and he will go to dog heaven you will go to unhuman hell. your day will come and you will rot in the fire. bg

  9. He should be in jail and his license for carrying a gun or possessing one should be revoked. He killed that dog on a path where other people and children walk and there were other dogs nearby. What kind of eyesight does this “Thing” have? He should also pay restitution for her loss. Trigger happy hunters near trails where people walk with their families and pets. Stiff penalties for people like this who think “I’m sorry is all it takes to get out of what he did.

  10. Why is a “trophy hunter” hunting anywhere near a hiking trail? The “cooperative,” POS hunter simply an error of judgement? BS he simply wanted to kill something, why would a “wolf” be running with 9 other dogs? I think a law suit is in order, this Idiot hunter owes this woman for killing her dog and should be paying something!

  11. What a Tragic and Horrific Ordeal for this lady, her friend, and a SAD! SAD! ending for her lovely companion dog… The bastard that PULLED THAT TRIGGER NEEDS to have a Civil Suite filed against HIM !!! ASAP this was SO! SO! wrong and I can’t understand WHY IN THE HELL he wasn’t charged with reckless endangerment and shooting a domestic animal ( which IS GROSS NEGLENCE !!! Was the responding officer lazy or just didn’t give a ” Rat’s Ass!!!!”

  12. OMG there was no error in judgement. He knew he was killing a domesticated animal otherwise the “wolf” would have been attacking the dogs and hikers. Bastard should be in jail and all his weapons seized immediately

  13. This is an unfortunate tragic incident. Im a dog owner, animal lover and this hurts. I dont care for hunters, I believe killing animal for sport is disgusting.
Now, I know ive seen service dogs wear vest orange and yellow for purpose. This dog shouldve been in proper attire, all the dogs. This may have been prevented had the hunter seen the dog was not a threat. I can understand this hunter believed he was protecting this woman and her dogs. No matter how you spin thia, its an all around tragic event and it wont bring backKaoru back. I hope moving forward if the dogs are brought into the wooded area they wear protectove vests indicating their service dogs not threats. May Kaoru rest in peace.

    • The dog was a therapy dog for children with autism, why, if you are walking 9 dogs would you think they should have a vest on? This hunter didn’t think he was protecting the dogs and the women, when spoken to he didn’t even indicate he thought the dog was a “wolf”. A hunter is responsible for knowing what they are shooting at, let’s not blame the poor women who frequently walk these dogs on this trail for the “lack of judgment” this killer had! The tragic part is he faces NO repercussions for being irresponsible!

  14. Heartbreaking I would of whooped his ass good . taken his gun away . and make him carry my dog back to the authorties, what an ass big dick witha gun.loooooser

  15. Civil Suit….. Sue the hunter…. i’d rather donate to a lawyer to sue him for the cost of the dogs training, and replacement cost, plus pain and suffering.

  16. WHY in the world would a hunter be anywhere near a HIKING TRAIL!?!?!? Hunting for “trophies” is absolutely horrible. YOU NEED A TROPHY YOU INSECURE CREEP???? Join a sporting team, golf, play something that you can win your precious trophy BY NOT KILLING a beautiful animal!! This is the most senseless murder I have heard of yet. Of course he is being cooperative, what else could he be with such a major screw up on his part.
Bless you during your loss of your beautiful fur baby…. that precious baby KNOWS THIS WAS NOT your fault…but that of a monster.

  17. A “murderous” error in judgement. It could have easily been a human animal that took the bullet. RIP beautiful Kaoru. I hope there will be some justice for you.

  18. This sure puts the term ‘trophy hunter’ in perspective – this idiot was in an area where people hike WITH their animals but all he was concerned with was another ego trip – just shows the lack of brain power these idiots have – he killed a dog SUPPOSEDLY thinking it was a wolf – he didn’t care what it was – it moved.

  19. I’m so sorry for your loss of this beautiful dog. Literally in tears….. the guy who shot her is an asshole and should never own a firearm again. That was was no mistake when people are nearby hiking . He could have kil.ed someone besides the dog. I hope someone around the area takes care of this POS. He should rot in hell.

  20. Ummm, somebody doesn’t know their own state laws, including (apparently) California law enforcement. IT IS NOT LEGAL TO HUNT WOLVES IN CALIFORNIA. Ever. At any time. There are only two states that open up wolf hunting for a period of time during the year, and that’s Idaho and Wyoming. Why is this dog killer not being prosecuted for poaching? He admitted he thought he was shooting a wolf, which is an admission that it was clearly intentional, which means that he intended to poach knowing that it’s not legal to shoot wolves in California, even if it turned out to be a dog and not a wolf. Who the hell dropped the ball on that?!? Seriously, this family needs to hire an attorney and put that arsehole shooter in jail.

    • Never mind. I misread. I thought this was in Sacramento, California. I have no idea what the hunting laws are in Vancouver or BC, so I’m afraid these folks are on their own. They could have had a case here in the States…:-(

  21. IF THESE LAWS WOULD ALLOW ALL THESE LOW LIFE TROPHY HUNTERS, ANIMAL ABUSERS TO BE KILLED IT WOULD BE A BETTER PLACE. I HOPE THESE POS ALL ROT AND DIE NOW. THEY ARE NOTHING BUT A PROBLEM TO OUR SOCIETY AND A WASTE OF HUMAN LIFE. NO NEED TO BE ON THIS EARTH. I WOULD LOVE TO KILL THEM MYSELF. THEY DO NOTHING BUT DISGUST ME WITH ANGER.
