In the Exuma Cays, Bahamas, some of the famous swimming pigs have died after tourists have been alleged as feeding them beer and  rum. According to the Independent, seven of the animals were found dead in the ocean now prompting the government to ban tourists from feeding the animals. It is unclear if the deaths of the pigs were intentional or accidental.

Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources V. Alfred Gray notes that visitors to the Exuma Cays love swimming and feeding the pigs, but it was determined the seven dead animals had been fed the wrong foods. One of the owners of the pigs, Wayde Nixon stated:

“He (the government) gave them shots, he gave them medicine, and I was there and I worked with them for three days straight.”

Fifteen pigs are still healthy and tourists will still be welcome to swim with the animals, but now it’s time for stricter regulations. Swimming with the pigs is a unique experience popular with tourists traveling to the island.  Nixon has owned the pigs for more than 30 years, and this tragedy has never occurred before, however:

“…. now we are going to have to regulate it. Right now, it’s blowing out of proportion with people, anybody bringing food here, anybody doing what they want to do. We have people coming there giving the pigs beer, rum, riding on top of them; all kind of stuff. That never happened, but lately it has because it’s so big, and we are never really there all the time,” Nixon explained.

The family plans to be on the beach at all times and will have government permission to require tourists to comply with regulations making it safe for the pigs and tourists alike.

It’s just getting worse. There was a time people were at least under some kind of restraint, but they aren’t even being raised with any kind of manners nor decorum any more. Right and wrong? They don’t know what they are. Parents don’t take the time to teach their kids anything, nor say ‘no’ even when these scumbags do the most awful things, and schools won’t discipline them because parents have pretty much bullied them into submission. It’s a totally different world than the one I came into.

What a horrible thing to do to these pigs. Humans are getting out of hand. Can’t they enjoy something without it leading to death of an innocent animal? Despicable humans, how I hate most of the species!

  3. Carole says:

I agree with everything said about how horrible most humans are these days. The tourists need to be prosecuted and made to pay for their cruelty.

These are not tourists – these are idiotic cruel aholes who could care less about these pigs and their actions proved it. No food should be allowed in Exuma Cays. Anyone caught feeding the pigs should be immediately barred permanently. In fact, the swimming w/pigs should also be eliminated – these pigs deserve better than to be victims of ignorant brainless jerks. The owner now knows the danger that exists and needs to take steps to keep his animals safe.

This is why you have to be hyper vigilant! Human beings think it is funny to give animals booze and drugs! Now there are little pigs dead because of stupidity!
