On July 25, Toto was brought to the New York City Animal Care Center in Brooklyn. The one-year-old black and brown Rottweiler mix had been struck by a car resulting in a severe pelvic fracture. Despite his pain, Toto allowed all handling. Toto had not been able to stand without assistance and even though he seemed to have been well cared for, no one came to the shelter to claim him. With surgery, his prognosis had been listed as “fair,” however the shelter was unable to afford the expensive orthopedic surgery and follow-up rehabilitation for Toto. On Friday evening, Toto was therefore placed on the euthanasia list.

“TOTO – A1119689 – Brooklyn – Rescue Only
TO BE DESTROYED 07/29/17 **NEEDS A NEW HOPE RESCUE TO PULL”

When volunteers reached out to Stacey Silverstein, co-founder of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC for one last hope in order to save the life of the sweet puppy, Stacey agreed. At 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, the news of Toto’s rescue was reported on the group’s Facebook.

“Toto was scheduled to die today at the NYC ACC because he was hit by a car, sustaining multiple fractures of his hip pelvis and leg, and he needs multiple expensive surgeries to survive and walk again. The shelter is unable to provide the care he needs so he was placed on the ‘Euthanasia List’ today. He could only be saved by a rescue partner due to the severity of his injuries. Sadly, due to the expensive surgery Toto needs to survive. NOT ONE rescue group stepped up for poor Toto. There we were at 3 pm today having to make another leap of faith to help Toto.”

Toto arrived at the organization’s partner specialty hospital on Saturday evening. Sadly the puppy is unable to walk and has no control over his bowels or bladder. A catheter has been placed in his bladder to prevent urine buildup, however the medical team is worried the puppy might have injury to his spince. At this time, the doctors are hoping his inability to hold his urine and bowels are due to trauma. He has been placed on steroids hoping the medication will reduce the swelling.

“We were worried when we pulled Toto to safety from the NYCACC about raising money for his surgery, and now we face an even greater obstacle, whereby Toto will need an MRI of his spine at the cost of $2500 before we can even contemplate surgery,” Stacey posted on Facebook concerning the puppy’s medical update. “It’s not Toto’s fault he was running loose on the NYC city streets and hit by a car. He was found by Animal Control and deemed a stray and brought to the city shelter to die.”

Stacey admits that Rescue Dogs Rock NYC had not been in the position to help Toto on Saturday after taking in so many critical cases within the last week, but they couldn’t just let the puppy die. A YouCaring link has been established to help raise the funds for Toto. Please help Toto and make it possible for Rescue Dogs Rock NYC to continue rescuing the most critical cases of abuse and neglect. If they don’t, who will?

  1. Someone had to own this lovely dog but won’t step forward I am sure, because of the medical expense.Owners should at least see their dog and maybe if this dog was loved. recognizing his owner might lift his spirits.

  2. Pourquoi il n’y a personne pour cet ange, il n’a rien fait, il veut juste être aimé par une vraie famille. Aidez ce bébé s’il vous plaît. MERCI.

  5. As always, Rescue Dogs Rock steps up to the plate to help!! I don’t want to think what would happen to so many critical dogs if Rescue Dogs Rock wasn’t there. Thank You!! Lets hope Toto doesn’t have spinal injury, and hope his mobility can be recovered. Will follow his progress, and so many others, on their website. Thank You!!!

  6. This poor poor sweet dog!! I’m wondering if all the moving him around and the delay in getting medical care has now injured his spine, this is so very heartbreaking! I will be praying hard for ToTo! I agree that it wouldn’t hurt some of these vets to occasionally donate their services to help a ownerless seriously injured dog! THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH RESCUE DOGS ROCK NYC…..AGAIN!
