On July 25, Toto was brought to the New York City Animal Care Center in Brooklyn. The one-year-old black and brown Rottweiler mix had been struck by a car resulting in a severe pelvic fracture. Despite his pain, Toto allowed all handling. The medical staff at the shelter reported the following:

“Allows all handling. Drinking water, ate small amount of food. Medical staff observed normal urination. Resting, appears comfortable, in cage EENT: Teeth clean, pink moist mm, eyes clear, no ocular or nasal discharge, ears wnl HL: Normal RR/rE MSI: No attempts to stand, swelling of RH limb Assessment: hit by car–pelvic fx. left acetaculum, right ischium, bladder appear intact on rads Appears comfortable, stable at this time Plan: Continue to monitor while at BACC. Continue with LRS, rimadyl and hydromorphone Prognosis: fair with surgery SURGERY: Temporary waiver due to trauma.”

Toto has not been able to stand without assistance and even though he seems to have been well cared for, no one came to the shelter to claim him. With surgery his prognosis has been listed as “fair,” however the shelter is unable to afford the expensive orthopedic surgery and follow-up rehabilitation for Toto. On Friday evening, Toto was therefore placed on the euthanasia list.

“TOTO – A1119689 – Brooklyn – Rescue Only
TO BE DESTROYED 07/29/17 **NEEDS A NEW HOPE RESCUE TO PULL”

Animal advocates have been pledging funds for the dog who could only be released to an approved rescue organization. By 3:00 Saturday afternoon, not one rescue had stepped forward to help. When volunteers reached out to Stacey Silverstein, co-founder of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC for one last hope in order to save the life of the sweet puppy, Stacey agreed. At 3:00 p.m., the news of Toto’s rescue was reported on the group’s Facebook.

“Toto was scheduled to die today at the NYC ACC because he was hit by a car, sustaining multiple fractures of his hip pelvis and leg, and he needs multiple expensive surgeries to survive and walk again. The shelter is unable to provide the care he needs so he was placed on the ‘Euthanasia List’ today. He could only be saved by a rescue partner due to the severity of his injuries. Sadly, due to the expensive surgery Toto needs to survive. NOT ONE rescue group stepped up for poor Toto. There we were at 3 pm today having to make another leap of faith to help Toto.”

Funds are needed to help pay for Toto’s surgery. Earlier Saturday morning, Rescue Dogs Rock NYC also accepted an emaciated mother dog with her three remaining puppies into their care. That family is currently being administered emergency treatment in a veterinarian hospital in south Texas.

  1. OMG! Once again RESCUE DOGS ROCK NYC steps up to the plate! This poor, poor dog! RESCUE DOGS ROCK NYC IS TRULY A COMPASSIONATE OUTSTANDING RESCUE ORGANIZATION! They ALWAYS take on the sickest unwanted dogs out there! I’m in awe of them!

  2. Urgent. Rimadyl for pain will kill him. He will bleed to death. it goes to the liver and they bleed from mouth, anus, nose and just die. QUIT IT. iF HE HAS A LICK OF LAB IN HIM IT IS EVEN WORSE. LOOK IT UP. i don’t donate to those that don’t know and put animals in worse danger.

    • Vicki hood HOW UTTERLY OFFENSIVE YOUR COMMENT IS!!!! Rimadyl wouldn’t even begin to touch the kind of pain this dog is in so I’m sure he is getting something much more effective than Rimadyl! The fact that u seem to think u know more than the veterinarians about what is appropriate treatment for this dog is absolutely ridiculous! SMH Very sad that u have decided not to donate because u think u know more about what kind of treatment this poor dog needs than a vet! TOTAL INSANITY ON UR PART! But hey u looked it up so of course u know better than the vets! But that’s ok because the rest of us will donate and u can go and use ur veterinary schooling elsewhere! GET WELL SOON TOTO
