Toto: No days to lick at the wind nor a time to play

On July 25, Toto was brought to the New York City Animal Care Center in Brooklyn. The one-year-old black and brown Rottweiler mix had been struck by a car resulting in a severe pelvic fracture. Despite his pain, Toto allowed all handling. Toto had not been able to stand without assistance, and even though he seemed to have been well cared for, no one came to the shelter to claim him. With surgery,  the shelter has listed his prognosis as “fair,” however the shelter was unable to afford the expensive orthopedic surgery and follow-up rehabilitation for Toto. On Friday evening, Toto was therefore placed on the euthanasia list.

“TOTO – A1119689 – Brooklyn – Rescue Only
TO BE DESTROYED 07/29/17 **NEEDS A NEW HOPE RESCUE TO PULL”

When volunteers reached out to Stacey Silverstein, co-founder of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC for one last hope in order to save the life of the sweet puppy, Stacey agreed. At 3:00 p.m. Toto was rescued and transported immediately to the organization’s partner specialty veterinarian. Just days later came the tragic news no one wanted to hear.

On Wednesday morning, the devastating results of Toto’s diagnosis was shared:

“After a battery of X-rays and diagnostic tests performed and a consult and exam by a renowned board certified orthopedist, it has been determined that Toto’s spine is severed; leaving him paralyzed and unable to urinate on his own . He also suffered 3 pelvic fractures, his hip is out of its socket and one of his legs is severely damaged. His anal gland nerves are completely non functioning and have no chance at rejuvenating, leaving Toto’s back end paralyzed and unable to go to the bathroom on his own,” Stacey wrote on the group’s Facebook page.

Sadly, Toto was not a candidate for “wheels” as he would have need a catheter in place to drain his urine for the rest of his life. It was then determined by the staff and Rescue Dogs Rock NYC, that Toto would have no quality of life and would continue to suffer in his debilitated state.

“The decision to put Toto to sleep was not an easy choice to make, and this young and beautiful dog deserved better. Toto was surrounded by caring people who held him tight before he passed over,” Stacey wrote. “Rest In peace Toto.  Your life mattered.”
