No job too big, no creature too small for Austin Fire Department’s Engine 8 crew. A tiny kitten, who somehow managed to get stuck on one of the busiest stretches of road in the city, was rescued on Monday evening.

According to the fire department, a good Samaritan spotted the tiny feline huddled near the barrier on northbound Highway 183 at the Braker Lane exit and she called for help. The department wrote of the kitten’s precarious location:

If you’re not familiar with this stretch of road, it’s one of the busiest in the city; speeds can easily top 75 mph when traffic is moving. Thankfully, the little grey tabby girl is healthy, and only has a beat-up nose that should heal soon.

The Engine 8 crew physically rescued the tiny kitten, but it was Karin Sanchez who saw her and took the time to call for help. The Austin Fire Department commended Sanchez for calling them to help and let its Facebook followers know that her good work is not done – Sanchez told them:

“We are fostering the kitten until she is social enough and old enough to be spayed. We foster every now and then so we are happy to care for her until we find a good home. The best part is not a single person made me feel crazy or like a kitten on a highway wasn’t important. They just came out and picked her up like it was part of their every day job.”

The department added:

If we can help, we will. We say it often, but it bears repeating: we serve ALL the citizens of Austin, whether they’re two-legged OR four-legged! That’s what we mean when we say, “our mission goes beyond our name.” #kittypalooza #whoyagonnacall

Great work!!
