Meet Calypso; just a five-month-old Chihuahua who weighs three-pounds and who tries to scratch with every step she takes. What was once a simple case of mange and easily cured by bringing the puppy to a veterinarian for treatment, this innocent little one’s condition was ignored.  And over months – not just days, Calypso continued to suffer. On Friday, Second Chance Rescue NYC Dogs came to her rescue.

“There are no words for the shape Calypso arrived in today. She’s only 5-6 months … Her eyes are watering constantly from all the irritation. This has developed over months, not days…. how this happened, how someone watched this happen, how long has this baby been suffering? She’s under medical watch now, antibiotics, pain meds, small frequent meals…”, the group posted to their Facebook page to update their followers after the puppy’s disturbing photo was posted.

Demodectic mange in dogs is a common infestation of the dog’s skin composed of tiny, cigar-shaped, eight-legged mites that live and feed in the hair follicles. It is not as severe as Sarcoptic mites (often called scabies), and many times can resolve itself, however dogs with suppressed immune systems can present with more serious cases. With Calypso, her mange has been compounded by a severe skin infection accompanying a possible blood infection; attributed to neglect. The puppy is now being treated and will remain at the organization’s veterinary partner until she is strong enough to be fostered.

To help with Calypso’s care, donations can be made here  or by mail to Second Chance Rescue, PO Box 570701 Whitestone, New York 11357.

  1. OMG! This poor little baby!!! I hope they have her feeling better really soon! Like all dogs this sweet baby deseves so much better!

  2. this was a terrible video. showed no picture of dog or anything. just some women giggling and laughing, apparently at the poor puppy’s misery. if you can’t send the video correctly don’t send anything. I was horrified at the insensitivity of the giggling monsters.

    • The puppy was walking back and forth on the counter. They are laughing because he’s going back and forth washing his tail and is cute as can be even though he’s pretty much hairless from the mange! Fix whatever your receiving the video on!!!!! I seen it fine. Or put your glasses on….

  3. Omg – she looks just like my JoJo – same coloring. People make me sick. This condition could have easily been treated for very little cost. If a person cannot commit to a minimum of 10 years of care – DON’T GET A PET. JoJo is 13 now with a heart condition and he is loved and cared for. JoJo and his silblings and I are glad this baby is in good hands now. Dog is my co-pilot!!!!!

  4. Well, now I’ll annoy everyone by being the grammar police but itching is the sensation and scratching is relieving the sensation. So the dog was trying to scratch – not itch.
O.k., now that’s out of the way: What’s wrong with you people? This is a curable disease! Why do you fools let an animal suffer like this? I’ll bet if people could get this they’d be at the doctor asap.

    • Hes itchy and scratchy. But not for long. With a medicated tea tree shampoo and a warm cozy bed
And a little topical cortizone be will be Better then New and ready to hold court in a fine and loving new lap to call his own.
      I wish I was itchy!!

  5. Poor Poor Calyoso !! Whish her all LUCK ???????????? and punish them how did this! !!! BIG HUGS FROM SWEDEN ????????????????????????

  6. Thank you Second Chance Rescue! I think the writer meant to state scratch not “she tries to itch with every step she takes”.

  7. There’s absolutely nothing to laugh about. Nothing funny at all. Action by the two women heard in the video is inappropriate.

  8. Whoever let this poor little dog suffer like this needs a major beat down – And a HUGE Thank You to Second Chance Rescue NYC Dogs for stepping up – Hope Calypso gets the safe loving home she obviously never had.
