On Friday, thousands of animals, many dead or dying, were discovered inside of a warehouse in Montclair, California. According to officials, as many as 3000 animals may have been stowed away inside of the building which was laden with trash and feces.

According to the Press-Enterprise, the owner, identified as 52-year-old Gregory Bowman, was arrested on Wednesday. When local authorities and animal-welfare agents were able to enter the building they discovered conditions which were described as appalling and inhumane.

The Inland Valley Humane Society and SPCA stated:

When we received the call that hundreds of animals were in urgent need of help, we didn’t hesitate. What we found at a business in Montclair was shocking. 2,000 birds, reptiles, fish and other exotic animals were suffering and living in appalling conditions. The warehouse was covered in feces and filled with trash. There was little ventilation provided and IVHS Officers could not find any food or water for the birds.

Montclair police Sgt. John Minook is quoted in the Los Angeles Times:

“Despite the doors being closed, we could smell an odor of feces and decay. For lack of a better term, a chicken farm smell. This is probably the worst I’ve seen in my career.”

Snakes, left inside of boxes, were found dead, as were many fish and reptiles. It is unknown if the owner was selling the animals or if it was a horrible hoarding situation.

  1. Just when you think you have heard it all…
I am soooo very happy these animals were found at all. I hope they can be saved. It sounds iffy. As to the owner (unprintable)

  2. Gregory Bowman should be hogtied and dumped in that vile disgusting warehouse – let him sit in feces and the smell of dead animals – just lock the door and leave him to live like he left those poor animals.

  3. How does a person become this nuts? They say hoarding is a mental illness but that is no excuse or defense to this man’s actions which directly caused the inhumane, prolonged cruel suffering and death of thousands of animals. Causing such damage and destruction of lives is inexcusable.
