In Phoenix, Arizona, police are investigating a horrible case of animal neglect after a two-year-old Lhasa Apso dog was surrendered to the Maricopa County Animal Care and Control on October 27, and his leg fell off while on the grooming table.

According to the shelter’s Facebook page, the heartbreaking case began when the dog was surrendered completely matted and knotted. Staff could not determine the breed nor the sex of the dog, but could see maggots embedded in his badly injured and infected leg.

“Our staff immediately took him in for urgent medical care with our clinic and took down all the information of the person who surrendered him to us,” the post stated. “During a ‘mercy groom’ the dog’s hind leg was so infected by the injury and lack of circulation coming to him from the knots, that the leg fell off his body.”

The dog was rushed to Dr. Steve Gilson at Pet Urgent Care, LLC to be treated, and they successfully amputated his rear leg as there was no other option.  Two Pups Wellness Fund has paid for the dog’s surgery and ongoing care. He has been named “Chance” and will be available for adoption in a few weeks.

Joseph Santiago, the spokesperson for the Maricopa County Animal Care and Control, stated it appeared the dog’s leg had been rotting away – mostly caused by an old, untreated injury underneath all of the matting and knots. According to ABCNews, a woman identified as Ophelia said she found the dog in terrible condition after it wandered into her yard earlier in the month. She said she tried to care for the dog, but when she attempted to groom him, he would bite her. She said she cared for the dog for two weeks before she surrendered him over to the shelter.

Police will determine if if charges will be filed.

As for Chance, he is timid and shy and adorable.  He is currently in a foster home where he is receiving love and attention. His adoption fee will be $50 at the West shelter and his ID# is A4007448.

  1. Chance, Hope you have a wonderful life now that you are pain free. Sorry someone treated you like garbage, but the future is bright for you. Thank goodness he was brought in and treated.

  2. I hope Chance finds someone who will love and appreciate him. Lhasa Apsos are wonderful dogs and he will give someone a lot of love and devotion.

As for the POS responsible for this: I hope you’re found and punished, both here and in the next world. Anyone who could do this to a small dog is truly evil.

  3. Someone needs to be held responsible for the horrific condition Chance was in – not sure if I believe the story presented when he was surrendered – this happens too often – scumsucks who are the culprits of neglect and abuse pretend the animal was a stray – I hope this Ophelia’s story is checked out by authorities – if Chance was her dog a neighbor will know – he deserves justice for whoever put him in this despicable condition. He so well deserves a safe loving home – please, some kind person give one to this little guy.

  4. Wish the original owner could be found and CHARGED for the horrible abuse this poor baby has suffered. Hopefully KARMA will find the monster and deal with them!

  5. I hope the original owner can be found and charged!! If not it’s up to you KARMA….find them and deal the punishment to fit the horrible crime!
