In a rather poetic situation, stray dogs, cast aside by society, stood guard over a baby who had been abandoned. According to India.com, someone left a six-month-old baby in Kolkata’s Howrah station with a bottle of milk and some diapers.
Nobody checked on the crying baby for hours – apparently assuming that she was with someone. But stray dogs who frequent the area took it upon themselves to stand guard around the lone infant, lying near her and forming a protective circle around her.
According to the Huffington Post India, personnel at the station finally took notice of the baby in the early evening after they saw the dogs hovering around her. According to multiple sources, the dogs refused to venture away from the baby – not even to search for food.
Officials who finally checked on the baby took her to an area hospital for an exam and then transferred her to a child welfare agency. The abandonment is believed to be intentional.
This is not the first time that a dog has come to the rescue of an infant – a few years ago, a stray dog discovered an abandoned infant in a Kenyan Forest. The dog carried the baby back to her own litter of puppies and cared for her until a human discovered the situation.
