In Bisbee, Arizona, a woman called Little Lotus Rescue & Sanctuary on Monday morning and left a message she had discovered a stray dog on her property that “didn’t look good.” The woman explained the dog could not walk and had been lying in a ditch.

“We got a message this morning about a dog on someone’s property that is in bad shape. I returned the call this afternoon and asked a few questions and requested a couple of photos. By the time I had someone go out there it was 3:00 p.m. She had been laying in a water filled creek in the sun all day. She is so emaciated that she can not walk, I was shocked when I saw her. This photo makes her look good. I just don’t understand people,” the organization posted on their Facebook page.

When rescuers arrived at the home, the temperatures had already pushed over 94 degrees. As the volunteers walked towards the dog, she had still been lying in the water-filled creek basically cooking in the heat all day. It was the exact location from where the woman sent the photo four hours earlier. The dog was found no more than ten feet from the woman’s front door and just a few steps from a shed that could have provided relief for a suffering animal. The woman had no explanation.

Since the dog’s rescue, Little Lotus Rescue & Sanctuary has been providing regular updates as to the dog’s condition. Her first update included:

“She is at least a middle aged dog but probably older. She has very long and unworn nails which indicate that she has been immobile for a while. She is obviously very emaciated and dehydrated and these are a few facts that we know at the moment. She is on IV fluids and antibiotics this evening. Her glucose is 544 which is very high, starting her on insulin in the morning.”

Since Tuesday, the dog has been struggling to survive; her condition is listed as critical.  Her blood work indicated kidney and liver failure along with a pretty low red blood cell count. Then came a bit of brighter news on Saturday morning:

“We are at day 6, we had a seizure free night! We defecated a solid stool (our second stool ever) and we were sitting up and “looking” around even though I don’t think we can’t see right now. We had a runny nose, we were panting, yawning, stretching and all those functions tell us that our body is starting to work. By no means are we out of the woods, but hopefully we can now learn more about her true medical condition prior to what lead her into the ditch. Thank you for all of your well wishes and positive feed back.”

Donations can be sent directly to All Creatures Veterinary Service, or littlelotusrescueandsanctuary.org or the organization’s mailing address found on their web site. There are a few things that they need if anybody has any of these items:

*AlphaTRAK Lancets
*AlphaTRAK Test Strip
*Large weewee pads

Because the woman stated she found the dog as a stray, authorities can not charge her with animal cruelty or neglect. For now, everyone is concentrating on a life that really counts.

  1. Thank you rescuers, however, I would have pick up the dog and cradled it. It was nice the woman called, but, she could have picked up the dog and moved it in a comfortable, cooler area.

  2. I am glad this treasure is now rescued and recovering from her ordeal…… I hope she makes a full recovery and is adopted into a wonderful furever family where she will be a beloved and treasured family member.

What I don’t understand is how someone could see an animal in obvious distress and leave them to suffer…… I would have been providing water, a comfy pillow to snuggle on…….

Whoever allowed this treasure to get to this state is a disgusting POS. I hope they are found, arrested and never allowed near another animal……. There is a “special” place in Hell reserved for them so they can burn forever for their cruelty…….

  3. Poor Baby, Thank You for helping, wish it hadn’t taken so long for you to get out there, Hopefully she will make it

    • Little Lotus Rescue is a volunteer rescue organization, not animal control. If LLR didn’t go that Sunday, no one would have.

  4. I’m glad the woman took the time to call the rescue but why didn’t she at least try to provide the dog with some shade? I am praying for this precious baby. And whoever left her like this, may they rot in hell!

  5. Some people are scared of catching some kind of disease from stray animals and would never touch one. Sounds like that was the case of the woman who called. May be she is not a big animal lover but at least a responsible citizen and I am thankful for that. For animal lover it is hard to understand how she didn’t help more. I’ve touched in my life countless number of dogs and cats that didn’t a bit healthy and never caught any sickness, I would never think twice how far I should go on helping – it is always all the way whatever it takes. But not all people like that and neither they should be. If the rest of us would just be responsible citizens the life would be quite wonderful. And may be that woman the next time around will go a step further. Some people grow into kindness. I pray for the poor doggie-girl, for Little Lotus Rescue & Sanctuary and for the woman that called.
