Update: Safe! Rescued by Karma rescue

In mid-September, a handsome, good-natured dog was walked into the Downey Animal Services facility in California and his leash was handed over to waiting staff. The six-year-old dog, named “Cynic,” was left with strangers – the people that he knew, loved and trusted turned and walked out the door.

Months later, Cynic remains at the shelter – with each passing day, the spark fades a bit more from his expressive eyes as his spirit slowly breaks. The only time that the beautiful spark of life returns to Cynic’s eyes is when someone takes a moment to stop and talk to him – to let him know that he is not completely alone and forgotten.

On Monday, volunteer photographer John Hwang captured several images of Cynic – the poignant photos show Cynic’s dwindling hope, along with his desire to love and be loved. Hwang wrote:

He listens and he follows.
Because he believed in people.
He had a family.
That he loved and trusted.
And they brought him here to the shelter.
Where he’s been languishing for over 100 days.
It feels like an eternity. Waiting…
Why was I left here?
He may wonder.
His spirit is nearly broken.
When someone spends time with him,
a small spark of life is ignited.
But his days are dwindling, as is his hope.

Hope is fading

Cynic is running out of time – please help him find a new family, who would never consider betraying his trust, by taking a moment to network the following adoption information.

  1. How can any one do a thing like that? Dogs also have feelings. I hate people that do this to family. Because this is what my dogs mean to me.

  2. I would love to adopt him but I live on the other side of the pond. Please keep us updated. Hope he finds a loving home soon. Poor love.

  3. Honte à tous ceux qui abandonnent leurs animaux, j’espère qu’il vous arrivera la même chose et que vous resterez seul dans la souffrance jusqu’à votre fin, vous ne méritez rien d’autre que la solitude infinie.

  4. I don’t understand why people comment to adopt him but make distance a issue. It is about saving a life, Is that not worth making a effort to drive even if it is 1000 miles. I’v e driven from FL to NY to save the life of a shelter dog.

    • Melanie I’m sure these people have good intentions, but, not everyone has a car nor available transportation and the cost it takes to travel.

  10. The Los Angeles Animal Care and Control has amazing dogs at their shelters. There are five in all. If you go to their website you can look through pictures of the breed you may want. I worked at Baldwin Park and Downey shelters and they had the mixed dogs as well as pure breed. My aunt lost a poodle recently and I looked up poodles, and throughout the shelters there was 15. I have adopted three cats and have gotten dogs for people too. If you are into rabbits or other types of animals Baldwin Park has livestock too. Orange shelter also usually has livestock, and rabbits. Both of my son’s have cats from the Downey shelters.

  11. So utterly heartbreaking, what a thing to do to a living, loving beautiful soul such as this. Unless, of course, the people/person had no choice but to do so. Really hope that this lovely one has found a home for life. ❤️

  13. Hello, I was the previous owner of Cynic “Kona”. My self and my family are truly greatful for all of the love, support and help that went into finding his forever home. Unfortunately my mother in law had to move out of her home where he was living and couldn’t find a place that was pet friendly in time. My husband and I live in an apartment so we were forced to give him up. If you can please email me and help me find the owners, we would love to answer any questions about “Kona” they might have and would also love to meet and thank the family personally for adopting him. My email is [email protected]
