Recently, someone shot a disabled golden retriever named “Denver,” who was laying in his owner’s yard in Danville, Pennsylvania. Denver lived with Douglas Gay, who was just steps away from the dog when the cruel incident took place.
Gay told PA Homepage what he found after walking back to his dog, “When I came back up, the other two dogs ran up to him, and I thought he was stuck under the swing. So I moved the swing and there was blood everywhere.”
Denver suffered a terrible injury when he was young – he had been chasing after a squirrel when he fell off of a retaining wall and hurt his back. The injury was devastating and left Denver unable to use his bladder, bowel or back legs.
Furry Friends Animal Clinic, which is fighting for justice for the slain dog, provided some backstory about Denver on August 31:
He needed lots of grass to walk on and room to run so he could gain strength in his back and legs. The original family released him to Furry Friends so that Denver would receive the rehabilitation he needed and they couldn’t give. But they loved him and missed him. Denver’s new owner spent hours upon hours rehabilitating Denver. Denver became a part of the family. He had a kitten that he played with and loved. He had two German Shepherds as buddies to play with every day, and he had a pond to swim. Now he is gone.
Denver regularly underwent rehabilitative therapy and his owner stated that the dog was “doing great” before someone ended his life.
Nobody knows who would choose to harm Denver – or why. The local authorities, as well as the Danville SPCA, are investigating this cruel crime. An $800 reward is offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible. Tips can be phoned to the local authorities or (570) 473-3875.
