Two dogs on a sled team were killed on Friday when a train in Alaska hit them. According to Saturday’s Alaska Dispatch News, the devastating incident happened at Manley Road crossing, north of Nenana, on a training run.

According to Tim Sullivan, a spokesman for the railroad, the train’s crew reported that the musher tried to stop the dogs from going onto the tracks, but he failed. When the musher then tried to get the dogs to move off the tracks, as the trail barreled towards them, they apparently were too terrified to move.

The coal train, traveling in excess of 40 m.p.h., was not able to stop in time to avoid hitting the dogs who were on the tracks.

The musher involved in the deadly incident has not been named; no charges are expected. No other injuries were reported.

  1. They really just need to stop this barbaric practice. Every year at the Iditarod you hear about the dogs suffering and sometimes even dying. RIP to the two sweet dogs who were killed. I hope the musher rethinks his involvement in dog sledding.

  2. This game is almost as stupid as bull fighting in spain. its too long and to cold how about a reinvent.
1 man hitched to a sleigh loaded with a team of huskies. it would be a shorter more intresting event.
Truly a test of a mans grit, indurance, stamina and wiles. The event should last about 3 mins

  3. The musher should be charged with stupidity! Certainly he knew the train was coming and tried to cross anyway! Now two of his beautiful dogs are dead! What a senseless incident!
