In Palestine, Texas, six people await a court date after having been charged with setting a three-month-old puppy on fire in June 2016. According to the Palestine Police Department, the suspects poured an accelerant on the puppy and threw a match; more than 50% of the pup’s body suffered burns.
Police arrested three men and three women; all residents of the surrounding area. The Palestine Herald reports the following people were arrested: Perla Fernandez, 21, Jasmine Warren, 19, and one 17-year-old juvenile – all from Athens. Also arrested were Romello Smith, 22, Ronnie Morrison, 22 and Andreas Hicks, 21 – from Palestine.
On June 20, 2016, police found the sweet little dog burned, but alive and rushed her to a local veterinarian for emergency treatment. An eyewitness saw the suspects playing with the puppy near a car in front of her home. Just minutes later, the witness heard the puppy, named Remi cry out in pain and distress. She looked outside and saw the puppy had been set on fire; the female subjects were scrambling around, looking for water to extinguish the fire. Shortly after that, the suspects drove away, however the witness was able to copy down the license plate of their vehicle and later identify all of the people involved in a photographic lineup. Fernandez was the first suspect arrested on June 22; more arrests were made by June 25.
Although the puppy had been a neighborhood stray, residents had been feeding her and hoping she would soon find a home.
Tragically, Remi died as a result of her injuries. Rest in peace Remi. We hope you find some justice; you never had a chance to run in the rain, be a friend to a child or live your life to the fullest.
