The police in Sioux Falls, South Dakota were involved in a brief standoff and chase in the city on Wednesday afternoon. This time, however the suspect was a female, four-legged canine who refused to identify herself by name – and the following is what the police have reported.

According to the City of Sioux Falls SD Police Department,   a large tan dog had been causing major traffic concerns as she weaved in and out of the roadway nearly resulting in vehicle accidents and refusing to exit the highway even after the police directed her to move to the side of the road. With a group effort of the men and women in blue, the unidentified pooch was semi- corralled into a backyard area, and there negotiations began. Specialists offered the suspect Cheetos and promises of belly rubs; that didn’t seem to convince the dog to surrender.

It wasn’t long before the officers devised a more direct plan to safely capture the adorable offender. First came the idea of using a lasso, but the officer volunteering for that task had obviously not grown up on a cattle or a horse ranch. When Animal Control arrived, they were nonetheless foiled as their near attempt to capture the dog ended in a canine sprint. Described on the department’s Facebook page, the dog certainly gave her pursuers a challenge:

“Animal Control responded to assist, and the unnamed dog was nearly caught before it morphed into former Detroit Lions running back Barry Sanders and juked Sgt. Siebenborn, Officer Hunt, and Officer Dunn out of their shoes as they tried to grab on as she ran by.”

Back into the middle of  traffic the wayward canine returned, but when she decided it might be a good time to relax, the playful pup laid down for officers, rolled on her back and welcomed belly rubs she had been previously declined. She was then turned over to Animal Control for safe keeping until her owner comes forward.

The police department wants to thank everyone for their help. This is how dogs should be treated by police – this is why we love and respect the officers who not only keep us safe, but work just as hard to help our four-legged friends. Many thanks for reporting the antics of a large dog as officers used patience, persistence and professionalism to help a scared pet.

  1. GIANT THANK YOU to the Sioux Falls police department – They showed ALL cops in the U.S. how to handle a dog – I applaud them for not just whipping out their guns and shooting an innocent animal. They proved capture can be accomplished with kindness and patience, You guys rule!

  2. Thank you kind officers for being concerned in capturing this doggy. I’ve seen dogs weaving in and out of traffic. It’s scary looking

  3. A big thank u to these officers! Too many police just want to shoot and that is wrong, very wrong! Good job!

  4. So glad the cops didn’t shoot first and ask questions later. The write-up about how she eluded officers, became Barry Sanders, and declined belly rubs made me laugh.

  5. Thank you City of Sioux Falls SD Police Department, for capturing this crafty pooch and doing it without the use of guns. You went above and beyond what most police departments would have done, you are heroes in my book.

  6. Decent caring officers. NOT like what we just heard about LA area where officers trying to arrest on warrant , deliberately walked into back yard where dog was put for safety and shot and killed an innocent family dog. Just this morning these idiot police had to pull their big guns and destroy a family dog WHO HAD DONE NO THREAT TO ANYONE AND ALONE IS HIS OWN BACKYARD Great to hear of these Sioux Falls Officers serving their public with respect. They prove their decency and professionalism. LA —HAS ALL BUT LOST ITS REPUTATION BY HAVING SOME MACHO CREEPS ON THE FORCE.

  7. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You for helping this baby instead of just assuming and killing her. Thank You again!!!
