Show me your hardest to adopt dog
Spread the love

Some people walk into an animal shelter seeking out a lively puppy, while others seek out a stunning purebred dog. Sometimes a mixed breed dog will do, but perhaps only if the dog is young, healthy and has striking good looks.

But then there are kind people who know that many dogs are being bypassed by prospective adopters – dogs who are old, mixed breed, sickly, or otherwise ailing. One compassionate woman took it upon herself to seek out one of those hard-to-adopt dogs from the Front Street Animal Shelter in Sacramento, California.

On Friday, the shelter recounted the woman’s act of kindness with its Facebook followers:

This kind woman walked into our shelter and asked who the oldest, hardest to adopt dog was. So we introduced her to Jake.

According to the shelter, Jake is not only a senior, but he has cancer and skin issues. Those problems didn’t deter the woman. The shelter wrote:

Melani came to the shelter not just to find a great dog, but to save a life and give unconditional love to a dog in need. As you can see, it’s a match made in heaven. Please help us thank Melani…People like her are our heroes.

So many dogs are waiting for their own happily-ever-after. For those people who are looking to expand their canine family, please visit your local animal shelter and find your new best friend.

  4. Bless Melani, for giving Jake his forever home! There is a special place in heaven for her, may they have many happy days together.

  5. Glad to learn that there are others who think like me and my husband!!!!!!!

We love babies too, but feel older animals or those with health issues (who often top the euthanasia lists) can be fantastic companions!!!!!!!

Older animals are usually housebroken or fully litter box trained and adjust quickly to a new environment. Their dispositions are clearly developed so there are few questions as to behavior: one understands from the beginning who they are adopting…….

Health issues, even cancer, can be dealt with. Modern medicine offers options that didn’t exist in the past…… surviving cancer is possible…… there are lots of animal specialists today (our local animal clinic has cardiologists, oncologists, rehabilitation and ophthalmologists, pain management specialists, and dermatologists are nearby)……..

Glad this furbaby found a wonderful new furever home!!!!!!!

  6. OMG! I’m loving this post because when it comes time for me to adopt a new fur baby this is EXACTLY what I have told my friends and family I’m going to do!! I want to adopt the underdog, the one that has been waiting a long time, the one that keeps getting passed over, the one who nobody gives a second look! I have three seniors and I LOVE SENIOR DOGS! MELANI YOU ARE A KIND COMPASSIONATE,SENSITIVE LIFESAVER! THANK YOU FOR YOUR WONDERFUL KINDNESS AND GOD BLESS YOU AND JAKE!

    • So how long are you going to make said underdog suffer in wait?
The passed over dog you gush on about to your friends and family ?

      • Ellen, Give Cynthia a chance to breathe. Perhaps she adopted same already. Don’t call her out because she wasn’t Johnny on the spot. Maybe she had to wait for the shelter to open. Perhaps she had to travel to get to a shelter. She is doing a beautiful act and needs our compliments.

  7. Kind person Meloni. I think i see mast cell cancers. Starve those blood roots out!!!! Build up turmeric dose to a point of tummy rejection (urping) It starves the blood roots of these many tumors. You will see these little tumors turn grey–then black and disappear. Turmeric cannot hurt your baby. Mast cell usually shows up because of vaccines especially when as the animal gets shipped from one shelter to another. They get vaccine on top of vaccine. Vaccines destroy the auto-immune system . Look up ingredients and see the list of mercury(now called thimerisol) rotting monkey brains, pus(from many other species),formaldehyde, aborted human fetal cells and the many other dangerous ingredients. Meloni keep up the great work you are so respected for what you do.

    • me again (Vicki a vaccine victim). I have a remedy for what looks like mast cell cancers. I see all the little tumors on his neck and head. Most likely mast cell from vaccine that destroyed his immune system. Please follow the overdose instructions of turmeric. It cannot hurt him and it will starve the blood roots out of tumors so the tumors can die— not your dog. I have used it on same and passed it on to others who had great success. Large tumors have to be cut out. Wish there was a way we could converse and keep up to date. Love what you are doing. That is the purest most loving act and you have my deepest respect.

  8. Wonderful lady. There should be more people like her and maybe this world wouldn’t be as uncaring of people and animals as it is sometimes.

  9. God bless you Melani!!!!! What a kind soul you are. Thank you for opening your heart and home to one special dog. You have set a wonderful example for the rest of us to follow!!!

  10. I would love to do this….. but it would be heart breaking knowing you will only have them a short time…..but they still deserve love and a home of their own!

    • I understand what you are saying , but I adopted an 8 week old puppy and 7 months later I lost her at the ripe old age of 9 months. We are never guaranteed a long life with our dogs. To adopt an elderly pet has got to be, on some level, heartwarming to know you made their last days happy, and they knew they were loved.

  11. Melanie I wish there were wondering people like you. We have a,few pups in our shelter that nobody wants, because they are not cute or young. Bless yoku and Jake.

  12. They are the most rewarding if you want to feel like a real person. It is always great to adopt a rescue but the hard ones are closer to the euthanasia needle. Worse yet – the states that still have the gas chamber. Dogs are smart. To save them they have so much gratitude and they will always be your truest best friend.

  13. Melanie, Looks like small mast cell tumors on his neck Build up to overdose on turmerick and the blood roots to those tumors will die. The tumors will turn grey, then black and disappear. keep up the OD and in 2 weeks the small tumors will be gone. keep up the treatment but cut back a little more each week for 2 months. Let us know how it goes. I have had huge success with this and saved lives because of it. Mast cell usually comes from vaccines they get from shelter to shelter. Do not ruin his auto immune system with more vaccines. Only 1 is required by law. Do you have rabies in your area? Look up vaccine ingredients and you will see how they could destroy auto- immune systems. Much is written by doctors who have delved into the question. Big pharma is obliged by law to publish ingredients. vaclib.org
