A sheriff’s office in Caledonia, Minnesota, is mourning the unexpected and tragic death of a police K9. The Houston County Sheriff’s Office announced the death of the working canine, Ray, on Thursday in a Facebook post to page followers:

It is with great sadness we at the Houston County Sheriff’s Office inform you of the passing of our K-9 Ray.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the police K9 was struck and killed by a vehicle while off-duty. According to the Post-Bulletin, the young German shepherd, not quite two years of age, had escaped from his handler’s country property before being hit by a car.

The Sheriff’s Office noted that Ray was excelling in his work as a police K9 – they stated:

Although Ray was a new member of the Sheriff’s Office, he was doing a fantastic job as a K-9. He and handler Lt. Trace Erickson made a great team . Ray was brought on board to fill the paws of K-9 Chance who had recently retired. We appreciate his service. K-9 Ray… rest in peace. You will be sadly missed.

Rest in peace Ray.

  1. Horseshit! Where was this so called ‘handler’ – these dogs are precious and very expensive yet over and over they are left in hot cars, killed by criminals and now the latest ‘excuse’ escape and get run over. These ‘handlers’ should be held responsible for the deaths of these dogs who risk their lives to protect their human counterparts and yet are treated like trash – ALL K-9 dogs should be treated exactly like the human cops who treat them basically as poorly as criminals. Despicable.

  2. It’s always so sad to read of one of our K-9 heroes being killed like this. The fact of the matter is, they are in fact just “dogs” and despite their training, will escape and can get hurt or killed. Any of us that have German Shepherds as members of our family know how intelligent they are and it sometimes gets them into trouble. Rest in peace K-9 Ray, condolences to your handler, family and fellow officers, I know how much you will be missed.

  3. RIP Sweet Ray….. no more work for you buddy…. only running and playing at Rainbow Bridge. Please look for my Ty….he will show you around!
