Shelter dog ‘sprayed by skunk’ quarantined in kennel for six months

A three-year-old Siberian husky has had quite the run of bad luck. Haruki arrived to the Carson Animal Care Center on June 14 after he had been “sprayed by a skunk.” None of the dog’s medical notes have indicated any puncture or bite wounds requiring a lengthy quarantine, however officials at the shelter have labeled the dog’s encounter with the skunk as “Wildlife Exposure” – therefore requiring the dog to be quarantined for the next six months and not allowed to leave his kennel until December 16, 2017.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

“Dogs with up-to-date rabies vaccinations should be re-vaccinated immediately, kept under the owner’s control, and observed for 45 days. Any illness in an isolated or confined animal should be reported immediately to the local health department. If signs suggestive of rabies develop, the animal should be euthanized and the head shipped for testing.”

“Un-vaccinated dogs, cats, and ferrets exposed to a rabid animal should be euthanized immediately. If the owner is unwilling to have this done, the animal should be placed in strict isolation for 6 months. Rabies vaccine should be administered to the animal upon entry into isolation or 1 month before release to comply with preexposure vaccination recommendations. No USDA biologics are licensed for postexposure prophylaxis of previously unvaccinated domestic animals, and evidence exists that the use of vaccine alone will not reliably prevent the disease in these animals. Animals with expired vaccinations need to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.”

A Facebook page for Haruki can be followed here. This dog needs a hero to help him get freed. Share his plight with approved rescue organizations, friends, family and social media contacts. Sharing saves lives. Attached is his video. It is heartbreaking to watch this social boy pining away in a small kennel. Please share his story and help find a hero for Haruki.

“Although Haruki may have been picked up as a stray, since he had been neutered previous to his arrival at the shelter, one has to think he probably had been vaccinated against rabies. Not only that, but the dog has no notes he was ever bitten or scratched,” stated one animal advocate about the alleged unfair quarantine.

    • It’s the law. Because he is a stray, they do not know if he’s utd with his rabies shot. He could be released to someone that can keep him quarantined at home. Can you help him?

      • I realize it’s the law, as I said above, Who makes up these rules / laws? I live in Upstate New York, I would help him if I could but being all the way across the US makes it next to impossible! It might behoove someone to contact a rescue about him? Many of us have more than one animal to begin with and quarantining him wouldn’t be an option.

  1. How about this place trying to find his owner? Looks like a dog that was well cared for and owners may be searching for their dog. Put signs up to let the people in this community be aware of this dog. I bet the owner would show up or someone who recognizes this dog. It would seem that if this dog was neutered, he was also vaccinated against rabies. If the dog has no bite wounds (which would there would be obvious signs of), This dog should not be in quarantine

    • Dog are dumped or abandoned many times a day. Chances are Haruki’s owners don’t want him. And how is the shelter going to find the owner? Do you know them? Can you help find them? The shelter doesn’t have the people to put out found posters on every dog they get. Can you help them? What are YOU doing to help Haruki?

  3. Stupid asses! Someone must be looking for him! It isn’t hard to get the skunk smell out of a dog, nor should it be hard to find the owner of such a gorgeous guy to find out if he had his rabies shots (and he undoubtedly has). This is just beyond cruel.

  4. He is a beautiful dog he does not need to be quarantined what happend to him happend to my dog bytor and she was a husky I gave her a tomatoe bath a few times and she was fine that is what they need to do with him.he is so pretty he reminds me of my beloved bytor she was half Alaskan husky part silver shapperd and pack wolf she is gone now passed away of old age had her for fifteen years this beautiful boy needs to be walked not locked up buy his self. I hope he gets some love and a nice home.

  5. Another prime example of the cruel disregard for a dogs health and well being! It is TRUELY insulting to call these places shelters!! Rename this place and others like them what they really are…… proficient killing factories!!!!! Oh how I loathe this place and alm the others like them! They are denying this dog from being adopted and Im sure he would be adopted quickly if this cruel killing hell hole would put him where the public could see him! This fucking killing factory needs closed down!!! Ridiculous and so fucking stupid what they are doing to this poor dog! SMH

    • Actually I’m surprised they didn’t just euthanize the dog! I can’t imagine Carson keeping a dog for a month let alone for 6. I agree with you, this and several others in California need to be closed or find someone to run them that cares and knows what they are doing.

      • Surprised they didn’t euthanize him? That is really uncalled for. This isn’t the first quarantine. There was, I believe, a terrier that completed six mo quarantine within the last two months. He was rescued shortly thereafter. And I agree that it unfair. Can you foster him? There will be some restrictions but I’m sure you already know that. I know Haruki would appreciate it.

And you obviously haven’t been following Carson Saves Dogs otherwise you would have noticed that they have been keeping dogs longer. And while I am not a fan of Carson shelter, they do seem to be trying to help dogs get rescued rather than destroy them. Have you contacted the L.A. shelter system to help them find someone that cares and knows what they are doing? The head of the shelter system, Marcia Mayeda I believe that’s her name, can be difficult but I’m sure she would welcome your experience and advice. Good luck.

      • I think we have been through this up above. I’m a little sick of your snarky retorts to my posts on here. I live in Upstate New York, I have 4 dogs of my own, I have no way to go to CARSON and save the dogs there. While I applaud “Saving Carson Shelter Dogs for all they TRY to save, many go under the radar and are doomed! Obviously you have NO idea what I have done or are doing to save dogs and what I contribute to. Do they SEEM to be trying to save dogs? What exactly have YOU been doing to help? You seem more than willing to jump all over ME when I live way across the country. California needs people to step up locally as I do for my local shelter here. I’m sorry I ever even shared this and tried to help! Obviously MY help and opinion is NOT wanted or needed!

      • I would like to add also, your attitude towards me and the others on here and questioning “what we are doing” has turned me off. Yes I follow “Saving Carson Shelter Dogs” (you might want to get the name right) that is how I see what is going on there! I signed the petition that was out when these people decided to euthanize any dog that didn’t pass their “behavioral assessment tests”, I wrote to the shelter and voiced my disgust! I do and contribute what I can and don’t appreciate you insinuating that I do NOTHING!

  6. We have caring people in our shelters here in Fayetteville,Wv. One of the staff workers would not hesitate to take this dog home an give him his bath an guarantee him until he was able to be adopted. You have to have a heart to work in these places these animals depend on you.I see clearly this place Sucks! An before you come across being a smart ads an say can you help I do I saved R dogs already Thank you!

  7. Everyone commenting that this dog can simply be bathed and he’ll be fine…That isn’t the reason he’s in quarantine. He’s being quarantined to ensure he doesn’t have rabies after his encounter with a skunk.

    • Yes, but like the recent story about the puppy in Huntersville North Carolina, who is being quarantined for 6 months because a bat got into the house, what is the need for 6 months? Surely rabies would show up much sooner than that if they were going to get it!
