When Duke and his bonded companion were surrendered to the Orange County Animal Services in Orlando, Florida on January 25, their world fell apart. Their owner has been gravely ill with Stage 4 cancer, and no one in the family would take on the responsibility of the dogs – so off they went.  Although shelter life was devastating without anything or anyone familiar, the dogs still had each other and slept intertwined in each other’s arms.

And then a tragic turn of fate occurred on Wednesday. Duke’s brother died last night a shelter volunteer revealed early this morning on Facebook. And if Duke could speak, this is what he likely would have told us:

“The worst part is that my brother died last night. I was by his side when he died, but I watched him die and no humans were around to hold him when he died to tell him he was a good boy. I loved my brother so much and told him I loved him before he died, but I had to lay next to him until the shelter people got in this morning and found him dead. He is now safe at the Rainbow Bridge, but now I am all alone in a concrete kennel surrounded by noise and terrible memories of what happened overnight.”

Someone is needed to reassure Duke that he is indeed a good dog and is loved and still has a reason to live. He is described as loving people, but gets excited when someone approaches his kennel cage and barks. Volunteers think Duke just wants to make sure people see him – even though he is a senior pup wearing a black coat with streaks of gray and white.

Click here for more information. “Hi, my name is Duke. I am an approximately 9 year old black neutered male.  I tested heartworm Positive. I weigh approximately 65 pounds. I have been at Orange County Animal Services since Wednesday, January 25, 2017. If you are looking for me, please come to Orange County Animal Services at 2769 Conroy Rd., Orlando, FL.” The phone number is (407)836-3111. Make sure to reference #A137276.

Duke needs pledges to cover his medical expenses (heartworm treatment plus he has some skin growths that need to be addressed). He also needs a foster home before a rescue can save him.  His life literally depends on us to help. Share his plight with approved rescue organizations, family, friends and social media contacts. 1. I am so sick of families that won’t take in their relatives pets and dump them at a shelter. My heart breaks for poor Duke, it sounds like his life wasn’t great to begin with and now he has lost his best friend. Shame on his family! I hope he finds his way out to a loving home to spend the rest of his days.

  2. Poor sweet Duke. He is so handsome. Praying that someone fosters and then adopts this beautiful handsome boy who has lost everything during such a short time. What a sweet dog deserving of rescue. Thank you rescue angels. Blessed Wishes! Please SAVE DUKE!

  3. so sad, just isn’t right, poor pups have been loyal their whole lives and due to no fault of theirs they both are going to pass with no-one hugging him now that his brother passed. God knows I would help you Duke if I could for I have 3 pups to care for already

  4. I am THE 1,339 person across the country to VIEW this POST & I can’t foresee Many of the other 1,338 individual’s that aren’t crying… This BEYOND SAD STORY of DUKE & HIS poor brother that likely died of a TOTALLY BROKEN HEART and in Part for the STAGE 4 CANCER VICTIM whose “COLD and HEARTLESS ” family member’s have LIKELY threated their “family Member ” in the same manner they did the Poor , Caring, Loving CANINE COMPANIONS who were torn away and tossed like garbage. I just can’t stop crying and wondering how our world has come to THIS “IT”S ABOUT ME & ONLY ME SYNDROME”! I live thousand’s of miles from Florida and can only hope that someone or a rescue will help DUKE as he and his brother didn’t deserve this….NOR DID THE OWNER OF THESE DOG”S …. TOO BAD the ILL MEMBER DIDN”T LEAVE “ANY OR ALL PROPERTY& FUNDS and INVESTMENTS to HIS TWO COMPANIONS THAT STAYED BY HIS SIDE Thru thick and Thin and the remainder go to RESCUES and CHILDREN”S HOSPITALS of HIS/HER CHOICE!!!

  5. I am crying right now, my heart just broke in two. prayers for him to find a new loving home. Hard to believe that no member of this man family would step up to the plate. I am sure if this owner left behind some money or property the family will be right there to collect. Happens all the time. (hope I am wrong) How sad. Rip to his brother and owner. Prayers and sharing.

  6. I really feel so sad that these two brothers always stayed together, they needed each other even more, thrown out like unwanted trash, I really hope that he finds a family who will love and care for him for the rest of his life……..
