What could be worse for a 17-year-old Shih Tzu than being abandoned at a noisy animal shelter in Los Angeles? On April 23, Pitty’s world turned upside down and inside out. It’s doubtful that making the decision to move abroad was sudden; one would love to think a family’s loyalty to their dog would have motivated them to find someplace safe, secure and loving for her to spend her last days, months or even years. A volunteer at the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter sheds light on this heartbreaking situation:

“Meet ‘Pitty’ … when the humans who had cared for her for 17 YEARS, moved out of the country, and left her behind – not just behind – but at the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter. 17 YEARS of loyalty and love, gone in an instant… She was so sad and confused, and the wonderful staff and volunteers at West LA gave her a bath, and tried to help her feel pretty and loved again… and the awesome Cat Ku took these videos of her to help us get her seen! But nothing replaces having a real home…,” posted animal advocate Alice Ensor on her Facebook page hoping to bring attention to the senior’s emergency plight.

I weigh approximately 14 pounds. I have been at the shelter since Apr 23, 2017. For more information about this animal, call Los Angeles Animal Services – West Los Angeles Shelter at (888) 452-7381 located at 11361 West Pico Boulevard in Los Angeles, CA 90064. • After 17 years of loyalty a family abandons this precious pet! I still cannot believe how heartless cruel and inhumane some people behave as if animals have no feelings. Someone please save this little doggy. 17 years of loyalty she deserves to live the rest of her years with a living family. If I didn’t have 3 is 2nd on the next plane but 3is the limit where I live in RI. ,
How cruel and heartless can one day be. I hope by the 4th.e I finish this sentence that sweet baby has a home. She will die of a broken,,heart.

  1. This is on called for. They could have found a Rescrew for this Senior Dog. What is wrong with People Anyway?????

  2. I can understand how an move out of the country might be hard on a 17 year old dog, but you don’t just abandon your pet at a shelter. I hope Pitty get’s saved and finds love.

  3. I understand people less and less the older I get. They could have found someone to take their dog and give her a good home. Totally inexcusable.

  4. Thank you Pet Rescue Report for helping get the story out on sweet Pitty!

    • I am heartbroken over this story. I have had the privilege of having 2 Shi Tzus in my life. I am in Texas. I would take her right now if I had some way to get to her. I am concerned that she won’t live long. We all know they are companion animals. Tears.

  5. I will never ever EVER understand how anyone can do this! There is NO WAY IN HELL that people who do this have one iota of love for their dog or dogs in general,NO WAY!! I do not even consider them human! Just selfish monsters who I hope will one day find themselves old and abandoned by the very people that they thought loved them! Heartbreaking and sickening!!!!!!!!

  6. People from my church had to move to Italy several years ago. They had a 14 year old cat with health problems. They had him euthanized before they left. They didn’t think he would survive the flight. I considered taking him but wasn’t given the option. They paid $3,000 to fly their dog there. They gave their remaining older female cat to another couple. I knew that wouldn’t work because I could tell they didn’t like cats. A month later they have the cat to me. She is a much happier camper with me.

    • im sorry you couldnt take the other cat that was needlessly put down im happy you were there for the cat. real sophies choice. one killed, one givin to a family who didnt care and one dog who gets to s you go to italy.i bet the cat love you . i hope she makes you laugh every day.

      • Ellen Cottone – Will do when I get home. I’m headed to my dermatologist to get my old lady skin looked at! Routine once a year – but I will not be responsible to pay for her counseling after the trauma of viewing me in my birthday suit! Ha!

  7. This story brought tears to my eyes. If I was able, I would adopt her. There should be laws against this type of cruelty. Discustting.

  8. I’d love to have Pitty and love her and provide a loving home for her if you can get her to Denver CO, any rescue groups/transports able to do so?

  9. These people are not true animal lovers my shitzu of 8 years old was put to sleep thro been attacked by another dog in 2016 and I still cry over her they are part of your family heartless self centred people

  10. How terrible to abandon this poor dog, I have an 8 year old shi Tzu, I could never do this to her. I wish I could take her. I hope someone can adopt her soon.

    • We just lost an 18 year old Shih Tzu, he died in my arms. I cried. I wish that Shih Tzu had been here I would go get him. How sad. We have had 3 dogs to die, they are all cremated sitting in living room. We went two days and rescued a small Maltese from the pound. She had been brought in abused. She has a Happy Forever Home now and loves it. She is treated like you would a child. We love her so much. So sorry for that poor Shih Tzu, it really bothers me.

  11. I wish I lived closers I would take her, I live in Pa. I have a little guy who is 2 years old and I am home all the time. If there is a way send her to me!!!! I would make the rest of her life as good as it could be. You can call me or email me, I can provide vet ref.

    • Beverly, there are a few pet rescue transporters who will get a pet to various states. I believe for either the cost of fuel or a donation. You can inbox me on FB if you are serious and I will find the names and phone numbers for you to call.

  12. I cannot begin to understand how anyone could do this to such a lovely animal. I do pray that those who have already offered have taken her into their homes and hearts.
