It’s happened yet again – a police dog was forgotten in a parked patrol car and died after suffering heat stroke. The most recent tragedy took place in Mississippi when a Southaven police officer forgot his new partner, “Gunner,” inside of his patrol car.

According WMCAction News, the narcotics dog had only been partnered with his handler for three weeks when he was forgotten in the car, which wasn’t running and had the windows rolled up. Gunner, a six-year-old Labrador retriever mix, was in the patrol car for an agonizing two hours- his handler, whose identity is being protected, was inside doing paperwork.

Though the handler is reported to be “devastated” over the dog’s death, he is not going to be charged with a crime and he is still on the force. The department will be working on policy changes in order to prevent another, similar tragedy, from taking place.

Gunner is the first dog to die on the Southaven Police Force.

  1. If the same circumstances happened to a civilian, they would be charged with a crime. Why is that LE always protects and coddles their own when they are in the wrong? I hate shit like this. That officer needs to be charged with a crime, or fired, or formally reprimanded & suspended, lose pay, be disallowed to EVER have another K9 partner – something!

  2. You stupid son of a bitch!!!!! DO NOT HAVE CHILDREN!!!!He should have to replace the dog’s monetary value!!Don’t partner him with another canine!!!!!

  3. It’s against the law to leave a dog in a hot car! But I guess this police department is allowed to break the law and not be held accountable! Personally I could care less if this jerk cop is devasted! I hope he has horrible vivid nightmares about his senseless killing of Gunner till the day he dies! This police department should be barred from ever possessing another police dog because a dog is disposable to them! SMH

  4. Maybe part of the training for having a K9 partner is that they have to ride with a stuffed dog for awhile so they remember there is another living being in the car with them when they do have a dog. They should have to bring the dog in with them just like it was a living breathing dog!

    • Maybe part of their training is locking the police officer in a hot car around noon for hour or two. This is just common sense, if anyone has ever sat in a car in summer, in the sun, you know it’s like an oven. I hope he doesn’t have a wife or children.

  5. How are these people trained? Would they do this with a human partner? Get out of car, make sure no one or thing living and breathing is in the car, Then lock it. That poor dog to have suffered for 2 hours. Sure the officer is devastated buy what about the dog, he is dead!

  6. Why is he on the force? He can’t remember it is against the law to leave an animal in a parked car with no relief from heat? He doesn’t need to follow rules because hes a cop?

  7. The handler is “devastated”… but the dog is DEAD!!!
Criminal charges just MIGHT help this “rookie” REMEMBER HIS PARTNER??!!
NEVER allow this bastard NEAR another canine – EVER!
I’d sure think twice before letting myself be his “partner”…

    • I think that the police officers that do this to their canine partners should be forced to pay the department for that dog. They do cost upwards of $30,000. I wonder if that would make a difference to the cops?

  8. AGAIN! Won’t be charged, won’t lose his job and oh yes, the “policies” will be changed to prevent this from happening again! This should never have happened in the first place. Common sense tells you, you don’t leave an animal in a hot car! COMMON SENSE! These idiot police officers have NONE! Another police K-9 has died because of stupidity! Do us a favor Southaven Police Department, don’t get another dog, you are worthy of the dedication a K-9 brings to your department!

  9. Are you fucking kidding me????? Why the HELL is he not being charged??? There is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON Why he should have left his PARTNER in the car!!!!!! How can you “FORGET” your “PARTNER”. HE NEEDS TO BE CHARGED AND FIRED!!!!

  10. Unforgivable. This Rookie should be fired for gross negligence and be forced to pay for the cost of the loss K9 dog. He needs to pay for his stupidity with his job and wallet. Maybe other officers would then remember they have a living animal in the car.

  11. JUST WHAT this COUNTRY NEEDS!!!!! an officer who JUST forgets his PARTNER and allows him to SUFFER ONE OF THE MOST HORRIFIC DEATHS THERE IS!!!! YET her /she is a ROKKIE so LETS LET THEM STAY ON THE force >>> NEXT THEY WILL do some thing EVEN MORE HORRIFIC ( AS if there could be anything that bad) LIKE shooting someone carrying and ICE CREAM CONE IN THE DARK!!!

  12. He should be held accountable and given the same treatment as ANYONE who abused an animal…… do not let this monster off because he is “new to the force”….. being new on a job does NOT excuse you forgetting an animal is dying a slow, painful, suffocating death in your vehicle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. They’re protecting the POS cop’s identity??? Who protected Gunner….no one!!! He suffered horribly. RIP sweet pup. I’m sorry you landed in the wrong hands.

  14. Why should he get away with this? and he is still on the force, so he can go around fining and charging people for his exact crime? Where is the justice in this? I mean , are we going to let cops that get D.W.I’s off duty off the hook, and let them go on to giving tickets for same. This seems ass backwards to me. The police need to get it together and get these officers off the force. How pea brained can they be?
