Friends and family are mourning the loss of a rescue volunteer who was killed after a dog attack at an Arizona dog boarding facility. According to AZ Central, the 59-year-old woman was fatally mauled by an Akita at the Canine Country Club and Feline Inn on Wednesday.

On December 20, Akita Advocates Relocation Team Arizona created a Facebook post about the tragic situation and noted that the volunteer’s name was Carol Harris:

With great sadness, we share the loss of our beloved Carol Harris. She passed away today while helping rehab an orphaned Akita in the hopes of him becoming adoptable.

The organization noted that no further questions about the tragedy would be answered at this time. Jose Santiago, a spokesman for Maricopa County Animal Care and Control, stated that nobody witnessed the attack – the volunteer’s body was discovered by an employee at the facility after he witnessed a blood-covered dog running free.

The dog is reported to be in the care of Akita Advocates, which has confirmed that the dog will be put down.

A fundraiser for the volunteer’s funeral expenses can be found here.

  1. The Canine Country Club and Feline Inn not answering questions only makes them look very suspicious. Something happened that will probably reflect poorly on this place and they are attempting deflect the negativity. It is too bad this woman was killed BUT I am suspicious of the circumstances and of course, the dog is the one taking the blame. Anyone who is looking to board an animal needs to investigate this place thoroughly before using it.
