Barely one week after Queenie was discovered curled up in a small shed in Houston, Texas and few thought she would ever survive the first few nights at an emergency veterinarian hospital, the emaciated dog thrown away as trash, has now been able to take her first steps. The dog had been another victim of heartless neglect and when her photo was posted onto social media, Queenie’s heartbreaking plight went viral as the phrase  “a picture is worth a thousand words” so aptly described her.

Queenie had been suffering in silence until a  group of animal advocates coordinated her rescue with Rescue Dogs Rock NYC. From there she underwent  hours of surgery to remove and debride the dead and infected skin over her body. Her infections ran so deep that surgeons could see the tendons on her legs. She was then bandaged to protect her raw skin and continues to have  her dressings changed daily.

When the medical staff reported Queenie had started to eat on her own, advocates were encouraged – “hoping Queenie would continue to fight the fight,” the rescue organization’s Facebook posted. And on Thursday morning, Stacey Silverstein, co-founder of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC, labeled Queenie a “true warrior” and updated her condition:

“Queenie continues her miraculous road to recovery. Here Queenie stands and eats; something she loves to do. Every day she gets a little stronger. We here at RDR NYC NEVER GIVE UP. And here is why … Queenie had the will to live and her medical team agreed. NEVER did we discuss putting Queenie to sleep, because if she had the slightest glimmer of hope, which she did, to pull through her horrific, abusive past, we were going to make sure she had every medical advantage to do so. And now look at Queenie! Her road to a full recovery will be long and hard but worth every second, every minute so that Queenie can go on to live a beautiful life.”
