A puppy in Texas, who suffered severe wounds after being burned with hot oil,  is recovering. According to the Valley Morning Star, the mixed breed puppy, dubbed “Phoenix,” was first taken in at the Brownsville Animal Regulation and Care Center in mid-September after being burned.

According to the report, it remains to be seen whether or not the puppy’s former owner will face any charges for the burns. The Cameron County District Attorney’s Office has requested that the sheriff’s department continue to investigate the situation to see if charges are warranted.

Initially, the sheriff’s office stated that the incident appeared to be the result of an accident – in an interview, Sheriff Omar Lucio explained:

“It was learned that immediately after the injury was sustained, the canine was brought to its owner, who did in fact render aid to the canine. It appears the injuries sustained were not intentional, it was a terrible accident.”

But Phoenix’s advocates believe that animal cruelty charges are warranted. According to RGV Proud, the puppy’s owners waited four days before taking him in for veterinary care. By the time the two-month-old puppy was surrendered, infection had already set in.

A petition asking for charges to be filed can be found at this link.

The non-profit group, Donja’s Dogs, is helping with the puppy’s veterinary care. Donations can be made via paypal to [email protected]

  1. This is Texas where authorities have their heads shoved so far up their asses they pretend animal abuse is nonexistent. No animal in this state every gets justice. Its just one piss poor excuse after another and the abuser walks away. Phoenix deserves MUCH better.

  2. Phoenix needs some support. How can we help? Donations? Tell us where. Brownsville animal reg and care supported by taxes? We need to know where. Start a petition? Get after the courts? It’s only a start but Phoenix deserves a life without pain. Keep us posted. Most of us are too far away to foster or adopt. That face says so much, the police cannot get away with doing nothing.
