Pregnant Maltese dumped at shelter with grapefruit sized tumor

In another heartbreaking situation of neglect and abuse, a tiny white Maltese found herself at a high kill south Texas animal shelter this week because her previous owner didn’t want to deal with the grapefruit sized tumors on her belly. The dog, barely weighs 17-pounds; no one can even guess how long Lesli, had been carrying the tumors around as they oozed pus and blood.

Rescued on Thursday morning by Rescue Dogs Rock NYC, Lesli was rushed to the organization’s partner veterinarian hospital in San Antonio, and after her initial physical examination, came the shocking news. On top of all of Lesli’s serious medical issues, she is also pregnant and due to deliver her puppies within the week. Surgery to remove the tumors is not an option; that is until the puppies are born and possibly weaned.

“Obviously she’s had this tumor for a very long time, dragging it around and in the interim getting pregnant,”  stated Stacey Silverstein, co-founder of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC.

On Saturday, Lesli had settled into her foster home, however her condition demands 24/7 monitoring by an experienced medical staff.

“She has safely made it to her foster home where she will somehow give birth in the next few days. This is such a horrible situation, and we just cannot believe that poor Lesli has to continue this never ending nightmare. Giving birth while navigating an oozing tumor the size of a grapefruit with other tumors surrounding the largest one is so sad.

We wish it didn’t have to be this way for poor Lesli, and she could have had surgery to remove these nasty tumors and start her new life… She will be at the vet on Monday to monitor her condition,” Stacey added to the organization’s Facebook page updating the dog’s condition.

Please note, Rescue Dogs Rock NYC is in need of foster homes for two other pregnant dogs rescued within the last few weeks.

“We have 3 dogs that are pregnant right now, that we had no idea were pregnant when we rescued them 3 weeks ago from a kill shelter in Texas. We have secured only one foster Home for Lesli ( dog with tumor ) If you can open up your heart and home for these deserving dogs so that they can at least deliver their babies in peace then apply immediately.
