A police K9 in Colorado recently took a bite out of crime – or rather, a bite out of a criminal. The three-year-old Belgian Malinois, named “Lex,” was with his handler on August 6 when things turned dangerous.

According to a release from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, Lex was with his handler as the deputy responded to a trespass call in the early morning hours on the 6th. The deputy found the suspect, but the man ran during the questioning.

Lex’s handler jumped over a fence in pursuit of the suspect – according to the Denver Post, the suspect launched a brutal attack, hitting, strangling and biting the deputy.

A fence and closed gate were no match for Lex – the dog managed to open the gate to get to his handler. In short order, the suspect stopped his own biting as he was on the receiving end of Lex’s formidable bite. Thanks to Lex’s assistance, the suspect, identified as 25-year-old  Gabriel Steven Garcia, was arrested.

The deputy was injured in Garcia’s attack and had to be transported to a hospital for treatment – Garcia was transported to jail and he is facing multiple charges assault by strangulation, assault on a peace officer and attempting to disarm a peace officer.

Lex is being hailed a hero for saving his partner – Adams County Undersheriff Harold Lawson stated, “Our deputies view canine Lex as a hero for saving the day. We appreciate everyone in the K-9 Unit and their hard work to keep us safe.”

  1. A just so I understand,
The cop climbed the fence !?to get to the other side
But the dog, being of superior intelligence
Opened the gate!? To get to the other side!?
That’s just awesome. They must be laughing their ass of at the police station.
    Good boy!

    • It doesn’t say he CLIMBED the fence it says he jumped over it, takes less time. Don’t know why the dog didn’t jump over it too, but maybe the dog doesn’t jump, our dog doesn’t jump.

    • LMAO ellen! Looks like the Canines need raises over at the police dept. since they appear to be more management material than their handlers…and they are more brave and loyal too, no doubt.LOL

  2. Great, wonderful dog. Wish he were not just for work but enjoyed a couch and kids and was part of the family. He is not allowed to be part of family. When at handlers home he gets locked in a kennel. That’s the rules.

    • You are right, how sad. A friend of my sister told her the same thing her husband is a cop and he won’t have a K-9 dog because he doesn’t like the idea of keeping the dog in a kennel outside. I wonder how these dogs do after they are retired, do they blend in with the family very well after they were kept separated so long?

    • For all you that think ALL Police K-9’s have to be kenneled, look up Andy DeMonte of the Tiffin, Ohio police department. on facebook, Andy is as much a part of officer Jake DeMonte’s family as his little boy Timmy is. I have followed this K-9 officer every since he lost his first K-9 Tommy to lymphoma. Jake was named after two fallen Ohio police officers and has been a part of the family since he joined the force. He lives as a member of the DelMonte family, interacts with the public in parades and other functions . Not ALL police K-9’s are banished to a lonely kennel!

      • Then there’s hope.
        Things can be changed.
But only if people speak up.maybe.

I did not know drafted k9 personal are treated like equipment at the end of a hard days work protecting the people’s.
        That’s an eye opener.

I will have trouble now when I see k9s and their handlers on the beat.

  3. Lex is a police officer and a partner – he deserves all the same respect and dignity as a human cop – I say this because I am so sick and tired of these ignorant ahole piss poor examples who leave these fabulous so called ‘partners’ in their damn cop cars and let them die – happens way too often – THESE DOGS PUT THEIR LIFE ON THE LINE FOR YOU – RESPECT THAT.
