Puppies purchased from pet stores are blamed for a bacterial infection which has made dozens of people sick. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), puppies from Petland stores have caused at least 39 people to become sick with Campylobacter.

The CDC stated:

As of September 11, 2017, the outbreak includes 39 cases in 7 states (Florida, Kansas, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Wisconsin). A list of the number of cases by state can be found on the Case Count Map page. Illnesses began on dates ranging from September 15, 2016 through August 12, 2017. The most recent illness was reported on September 1, 2017.

Laboratory findings have linked the outbreak to puppies sold through Petland stores – 12 of the people who fell ill are Petland employees from four states and the remaining people impacted by the infection either recently purchased a Petland puppy, visited a Petland store, or live (or visited) at a home where a puppy sold through Petland resides.

Symptoms of the infection (in both puppies and people) include fever, diarrhea (possibly bloody), vomiting and fever.

The CDC has advised:

Follow these steps when choosing a puppy or dog:

  • Pick a puppy or dog that is bright, alert, and playful. Puppies and dogs should have shiny, soft fur that is free of poop (feces).
  • Take your new puppy or dog to the veterinarian for a health check-up within a few days to a week after adoption.
  • More information on choosing and caring for a puppy or dog is available here.

Follow these steps if your puppy or dog is ill:

  • Contact your veterinarian. Signs of illness include appearing sluggish, not eating, diarrhea, and abnormal breathing. Keep in mind that even a dog that appears healthy might spread germs to people and other animals.
  • If your puppy or dog becomes sick or dies soon after purchase or adoption, take it to the veterinarian promptly, and inform the pet store, breeder, or rescue organization about your dog’s illness or death.
  • Thoroughly clean the area occupied by your ill pet. If your puppy died, consider waiting at least a few weeks before purchasing or adopting another pet to reduce the chance of spreading disease to your new pet.

Adopt, don’t shop!

  1. NO! NO! NO!!! How about follow this when looking for a puppy……..ADOPT DONT SHOP!!!! I LOATHE,DESPISE,AND HATE,HATE PETLAND!!! THEY ARE A INHUMANE,VILE,AND DESPICABLE COMPANY THAT GOES BEHIND THE SCENES OF ALL STATE GOVERNMENT TO OFFER MONEY AND INCENTIVES TO SQUASH THE PASSING OF LAWS THAT WILL BAN THE SELL OF PUPPIES IN PET STORES OR REQUIRE SAID PET STORES TO ONLY OFFER FOR SALE SHELTER DOGS!! The are sickening, underhanded, criminal, untrustworthy, scum of the earth! I recently read an article on them and it said they are sinking. They have lost major business and money and hopefully will soon crash and burn and cease to exist! Like most entities that exist to make money off the suffering of dogs they deserve a little overdue karma, and I hope karma has now arrive to wreak a little havoc on them via of law suites that will in the end will put them out of business PERMANTLY!!! That will be one disgusting puppy mill broker taken down with many more to go!!!! This is so sad for these puppies and the people that have been sickened by sewer trash Petland!!!

  2. Shut down stores that still sell puppies and kittens and also close all backyard breeders and make it illegal to do that with either heavy fines or jail times. Also go after those who breed puppies privately in their home and then dump the mother dog when she can’t breed anymore. Fines and jail time for these people will send a clear message to end this practice.

  3. How about NOT buying one of these puppy mill puppies in the first place! Visit your local animal shelter and adopt a homeless pet that has been vaccinated and neutered and ready to give you years of love! Petland should be looking into the puppy mill they are supporting and turning these people in for selling sick puppies to them! Better yet, lets shut down Petland periiod!

  4. This is a prime example of what a pet store should NOT be – Petland more than likely gets animals from scumbag back yard breeders and/or puppy mills which ensures that these dogs were never properly taken care of, received little to no medical care, are products of overbred mother dogs, live in filthy unsanitary conditions and those that purchase from Petland need to wake up and stop thinking pet stores care about the animals – they care about profit – ADOPT – DON’T SHOP!

    • Nancy,Petland gets ALL of their puppies from puppy mills. That is why here in my state of Ohio we true to get a law passed called the Petland bill passed that would ban the sell of puppies in pet stores. Petland filed a lawsuit against Ohio so it didn’t passed. It made all the way to the end and then got squashed. California is now in the process of enacting the same kind of law. I despise Petland, they are a company that makes their money off the suffering of dogs.
