A 37-year-old Perth man  from Mirrabooka, Australia, charged with killing a four-year-old Golden Labrador retriever at the Perth park of Apple Blossom Polyantha Reserve, received no more than a slap on the wrist according to animal activists. Jayde Paul Rowan pleaded guilty to stabbing the dog to death last month.  On Thursday, Perth Magistrate Steven Heath handed him a seven-month suspended sentence.

According to the News Hub,  on May 17,  the dog’s owner, Bridgette, 22, had been exercising her two dogs, Luna and Choco, off leash when she noticed a man leaning over Luna.

“Within a split second Luna was on the floor. I thought she was just submitting, wanting to play,” Bridgette stated. “The man bent down. I didn’t hear any snarls, growl, yelps or barks. I thought everything was fine.”

One moment later, however the awful truth became a painful reality. Bridgette ran up to the man to make sure the small dog he had been walking was not being annoyed by Luna, but as she approached, the man put his hood up and mumbled something Bridgette said she could not understand. The man  walked away before jumping the fence and then broke into a run to escape.

“I got closer. I realized she was on the floor, blood all over her. I just dropped and started screaming and screaming… I picked her up and lay her on top of me and felt her heart and I couldn’t feel her breathing; she was gone within seconds,” she cried. ‘Luna was my baby… she was my first dog.”

According to Rowan, who claims to be an “animal lover,” told the judge he had been walking his seven-month-old puppy when he pulled out a knife and killed Luna. He stated Bridgette’s two dogs circled his puppy, and he perceived their action as a threat. His defense lawyer stated his client had not meant to kill Luna, but just scare her away, however there was more to Rowan’s story. Ten years before, Rowan owned a 13-year-old dog who had been fatally attacked by  two dogs in a park, and when he encountered Luna surrounding his puppy, it was “an instantaneous reaction.” His lawyer acknowledged that his client had no intent to “cause serious harm.” Judge Heath believed him.

After court, a very distressed Bridgette spoke out telling Channel 7News  she is afraid to go anywhere in public because she lives in fear:

“I don’t even want to go to the local shops, because I feel scared of what could possibly happen to me because this man thinks it’s okay to carry a knife and the judge has made him think it’s okay to carry a knife,” Bridgette said.

Bridgette may appeal the ruling.

  1. Instead of picking up his dog and walking away this human hunk of shit decided to kill Luna – I hope someday he gets exactly what is coming to him – some other mentally deficient individual decides Rowan is a danger and gives him the same mercy he gave Luna – NONE!

    • Agreed! I love the way you think Nancy. That is the only justice for our animals eye for an eye. The US justice system is a joke.

  2. Judge Heath, you are an idiot for believing this POS and his equally disgusting lawyer. My sympathy to Bridgette – and I definitely would appeal this decision.

  3. WELL I certainly HOPE SHE does appeal this sentence… and I Sincerely hope a good lawyer will take her case and file a civil suit for NOTHING… This was simply NOT RIGHT >>> THE JUDGE IS A NITWIT!!!

  4. She should at lease pursue a civil suit! If he was so concerned his dog was going to be hurt, take the dog and leave! His excuse doesn’t fly with ME! This is a bunch of bull!. If this was “an instantaneous reaction.” and didn’t intend to “cause serious harm.” then WHAT THE HELL WAS HE DOING WITH A KNIFE IN A PARK!

    • Judges sometimes feel so powerful that they claim the court as their own, My judge, very strongly said “This is my court and we do things my way” This was federal court on my severe injury case. This judge even was present to coach jury in the deliberation room. Then there are the judges we praise for delightful near eye for an eye sentences. Public certainly has the right to watch and report the lousy ones. .

  5. Another fucking judge that needs to be removed. What a fucker, so if he did the same thing to a human for the same reason, because it brought back old memories it would be ok? What a crock of shit. I’m glad she is appealing, that fucker should pay, her dog wasn’t injured it was killed. She needs to get someone to pay that fucker a visit

  6. This angers me soooooo much…..until abusers are punished to the fullest extent of the law, this will never end……

  7. She definitely needs to appeal this suit! For heavens sake, if he were that concerned, he should have picked up his puppy like a NORMAL person, not stabbed Luna like a BEAST!

Judge Heath is an IDIOT for believing this BS. Shame on him and that filthy lawyer. They’ve made it perfectly okay for a monster to go out and carry a knife to murder someone’s dog for nothing more than STARING at them!!!!

  8. Is this a joke?
Thus piece of excrement should be stabbed to death!
Instead, he is walking free, and there will be more victims? He won’t stop to kill!

  9. I can see Australia has big VAGINAS in authority (magistrates), as much of a joke as our judges here. Most of the time their is no justice for the animal and in this case, the animal victim’s owner…All the consideration goes to the perpetrator. Give me an damn break. I’m becoming crazed over how lax things are against animal abusers. They are pieces of crap. Does not give judges a right to VAG out. Punish these bastards, you big vaginas. Grow a pair. Don’t be so scared to throw the book at them!

  10. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE GET THIS DECISION REPEALED! THIS JUDGE IS OBVIOUSLY NOT FULL OF HIS CAPACITIES AND IS LACKING IRONICALLY IN JUDGEMENT ITSELF! LUNA NEEDS JUSTICE AND YOU NEED PIECE OF MIND! THIS MAN CAN NOT BE ALLOWED TO ACT AS A VIGILANT! GET AN ANIMAL LOVING LAWYER WHO IS A VIPOR IN THE COURTROOM!!!! I AM SO TERRIBLY SORRY FOR YOUR SWEET BANY LUNA! SHR IS GONE TOO SOON AND DID NOT DESERVE TO BE IN THAT CRAZY MANS PATH!

  11. Outrageous and ridiculous! He is a liar and when is it ok to solved a perceived problem with such horrific violence! I get the feeling that animals have about ZERO protection against abuse in Australia, animal lovers and animal advocates need to be raising some hell over the lack of laws and punishment against abusers/killers like this evil pos! Smh
