On Monday night, a paralyzed shepherd in excruciating pain was discovered lying in the grass in a rough neighborhood of Dallas. No one can be sure what happened to the dog dubbed Hugey, but he was unable to move and very vulnerable, yet he carefully took treats – obviously to stave off his intense hunger. Shortly after finding Hugey, an urgent plea went out to Rescue Dogs Rock NYC. On the organization’s Facebook page, co-founder Stacey Silverstein posted the emergency call asking rescue advocates for help:Hugey 2

“He can’t move! He can’t get up! He is still on the streets and being fed! But he needs help! The plea for help said to at least take him to put him to sleep (PTS) but we have to try to save his life! We are unsure why he is unable to walk, but he is severely emaciated and weak. A senior who has probably suffered his entire life! He cannot die alone in the streets! He is being picked up and rushed to the emergency vet in hopes we are not too late!”

Late Monday night, Hugey was transported to the emergency veterinarian hospital where multiple tests and radiographs of his spine were performed. The good news is he has pain sensation in his legs and although everyone thought he was a senior, Hugey is actually only three or four years old. The German shepherd clearly has been living on the streets for an extended period of time and having a very hard time trying to survive. The bad news, however indicates this dog may have an extremely painful and life-threatening spinal infection known to be highly contagious to both humans and dogs.

Further test results will take at least a week to confirm his diagnosis, but all precautions must be met and Hugey must be kept in isolation until tests results are available. At the current time, the dog is being administered several antibiotics to combat the infections, high doses of pain medication and intravenous fluids.Hugey 3

Early Tuesday afternoon, Stacey updated Hugey’s condition, but insists Rescue Dogs Rock NYC will provide this dog with everything medically possible to survive and be given a second chance at life:

“He also suffers from various tick-bourne diseases as well. Hugey is extremely emaciated, his skin is very infected and his immune system is completely compromised. We have already spent a few thousand dollars on Hugey’s medical care. Hugey’s continued care will be ongoing and expensive to treat. When we were called in the middle of the night to help, we did not know the extent or complexity of the injuries, but we knew no matter what, we could not leave Hugey there to die.”

  1. Hugey has a few critical issues but the worst is the spinal infection! If he pulls thru from that then the other issues will be easier to treat! He deserves a chance at life! The cost of a life how do you measure that! When it comes to an animal I will do everything in my power unless it’s a lost cause! I don’t think Hugey is a lost cause!

  2. My heart goes out to this poor dog. I’m on a fixed income and I just make it. I’m truly sorry I can’t help. Why do people hurt these, animals. I have 3 rescued kitties and they eat before me. Prayers coming your way. God bless
