Mia cried as she watched her best friend and previous owner walk out of the Lancaster Animal Shelter in California on Thursday; as she was no longer wanted to be part of the only family she had ever known.  How does anyone explain to a six-year-old Yorkshire terrier that her life may soon be over? How does anyone explain to a dog that her loyalty doesn’t count? A shelter volunteer tells the little dog’s sad story:

“I met Mia’s previous owner at the shelter; he had returned for her best friend Pepper. Mia watched and cried as her previous owner walked out of the shelter without her. He told me a family member surrendered her because she worked long hours and could not care for her. He said she gets along with dogs and cats, and is a little protective of her food.”

Click here for Mia’s adoption information. “My name is Mia and I’m an approximately 6 year old female Yorkshire terr.  I am already spayed.  I have been at the Lancaster Animal Care Center since May 17, 2017.  I am available on May 17, 2017.  You can visit me at my temporary home at L335. The staff/volunteers here at the animal care center have found that I spend most of my time indoors.  I seem to be good with small children.  I am house trained.  I am good on a leash.  I seem to get along well with dogs and cats.” A Facebook page for this dog can be followed here. When inquiring about Mia, make sure to reference A5067363.

Heartbreaking video as Mia’s previous owner greets her and then leaves the shelter with his other dog – leaving Mia completely in a panic.

Shame on that person, this angers me so bad……how do you take on & leave the best friend behind…..doesn’t he know Mia’s chance of being adopted are gonna be less because of her age…..this infuriates me…..I hope that guy can’t sleep one night without hearing Mia’s cries for help….I am praying for a kind loving person to come to Mia’s rescue…this was so unfair…why would take one & leave the other?

    • Debor33 says:

So they have time for one but not the other…so sad…..you just know Mia thought he was there for her too.

      • Joanne Bohannon-Ather says:

How can anyone do this to a little dog who loves them! Heartless. Again how people only think of themselves and what they want. I will take this little one in a minute with lots of ❤️ love. I’m in North Carolina. Contact

    • Danielle Charney says:

I am confused- he can take one but too busy for two – bastard – he should not have been allowed to take the other one either- he won’t lose a minute of sleep – he is a first class loser- she is adorable- someone better than that jerk will take her- he doesn’t deserve to even be near an animals

    • willcsaintenay says:

Personally I blame the rescue they should have said right there and then, if you really loved dogs you would take both, but we are not allowing you either, because what you are doing is tantamount to cruelty, that poor soul, it breaks my heart, god what must have gone through the poor soul’s mind

      • Kat Khatib says:

I agree 100%. The Shelter NEVER should allow this to happen again. Who took the video. I couldn’t have just stood by & watched without losing my mind. Heartbreaking. I truly hope Missing gets a BETTER, FUREVER HOME!

      • Nancy Lessard-Binette says:

You have it all wrong. Lancaster is a municipal Shelter NOT A RESCUE.
The story is the Terrier belonged to a family member, of the owner who retrieved his dog.
It appears the little Yorkie knows the person well, and was distraught being left behind. Can’t say I blame her, poor little dog doesn’t understand that she’s not longer wanted, she’s too much trouble for someone who works long hours.
I have 10 dogs, 3 cats, and work 40+ hours a week, I always have time for my
furkids, How can one be too much trouble, I just can’t wrap my head around that.

      • Shara says:

If only she could come here to clacton essex
I would love her poor baby it’s so sad to see how can they just see her and just walk away from her it would break my heart to even have to do that if I know I couldnt care for my animals and I only had one choice to give them up but could keep one I would choice to rehome them all no way could I choose

    • Linda says:

So So Sad,,,,,how could anyone be so cruel to a family member, as that is what our pets are. I hope that someone does this to them when they are old and no longer wanted.

    • liltigr says:

If there is a way to get her to Me I will take her in for the rest of her life I have to have someone pull her and get transport for her but I will take her she can join my 2 little ones and enjoy the rest of her days with us

      • Brenda Portier says:

That is very nice of you. I think she has been adopted so save that love for another little soul! You are a great person 🙂

      • Marion Friedl says:

REALLY, precious lil Mia´s been rescued/adopted??? I sure hope so, this story and the video´re heartbreaking, how heartless can some subhumans be, to take the one dog with home again and to leave the other furry family member at the shelter??? All I know´s that KARMA´s gonna get that heartless person who did this to poor Mia, I hope he´s only gonna have sleepless nights or a bunch of nightmares from now on, and I wish lil Mia pup nothing but the very best for her future life, hopefully in a loving furever home!!!

      • Marilyn L Durst says:

Oh, please, can we see some happy video with Mia being picked up and held by someone who will love her forever?…..She looks identical to my sweet Sugar Bear (who I adopted at 10 y/o), who we lost to kidney and heart failure at 16. We lost his sweet brother, Marley, in December, 2016, 2 days before his 14th birthday. I’m still not right (and may never be again!) and this video brought me to my knees. I would give the rest of my life for one more day with them…..

      • Lori Turner says:

I think she is going to be at Big Bones Rescue .

Someone on the comments mentioned it.

I just Googled it- they have dogs both in shelters and foster homes.

MIA is listed as arriving end of May – and up for adoption,

Mia still really needs a home.!!!

        I wish I could adopt her but I can’t .????????

      • Kathy Handcock says:

I can help with transport if you are wanting to adopt little Mia. Poor baby, she was so excited and happy and he walked on by! Shame on the family member who could leave her. I do everything for my animals. For my six dogs, two kitties, parrot and my multitude of goats, chickens and pigs. I can help with transport funds, contact me. I have asked for notification. Kathy

  2. Elaine Briden says:

What an ignorant sick fucking creep. He would have been better off to leave both there, at least they have each other. That fucker doesn’t care about either dog to do that

  3. Sheri says:

How could someone leave this pretty little girl behind?! Someone please give her the loving home she deserves. I live in IL and have 2 little female dogs, one of which is a yorkie, otherwise I’d take her in a heartbeat!!!

  4. Dana says:

I cannot even imagine the broken heart this beautiful girls must feel, she broke my heart. How could anyone leave her? Anyone with a heart. Did he hear her cries, her fear or pain? If I were close (I’m in Seattle) I would leave now for the shelter and grab her hold her and bring her home. Someone please, she’s worth saving, please save her!! ????????????????????????????????????????????????❤????

  5. Gordon Wright says:

What a lousy piece of crap he and his girlfriend are. How could they leave one behind. No time? It’s easier to care for 2 dogs than 1. Dogs are pack animals who do best with other dogs around.

  6. Red says:

After being surrendered, they should not have been allowed to reclaim. Once anyone SURRENDERS they should be banned from ever owning another fur kid!!!!

    • Liz Quin says:

agree completely, I work with people who have surrendered dogs every day. They should have not been allowed to go back there where she was to start with. If they were going to reclaim only one, a kennel worker should have gone back there. Sad that this happens every day in my county, Hillsborough County, Florida. High kill county shelter.

    • Bonnie Adele says:

GOD BLESS MIA AND THAT POOR OTHER DOG. I SEE MIA IS NOW SAFE WITH RESCUE THANK GOD ! ????????????????????????❤️????????????????

  7. Sheila Johns says:

I would like to hurt that manfor doing this again to this dog but worse. What the hell is wrong with these cruel mean people. Please Karma, bite him in the ass.

  8. Cynthia Como says:

It’s going to take me awhile to recover from the utter sad and cruel video of this heartbreaking abandonment of this sweet little girl!! If u have the time for one dog u have the time for both!! U cans feed and walk BOTH at the same time,u can love and pet BOTH at the same time!! Mia’s emotional suffering was made so so much worse by this asshole engaging with her! If he didn’t want Mia he could of had the staff bring Pepper to him! I’m completely crushed by Mia’s plight and her emotional suffering! OMG!!!

    • Barbara Cordon says:

I agree he should not have been allowed to go back there and get the other dog. If he didnt care how upsetting it was going to be for her at least the staff should have been aware of it and not let him go back. He was a heartless bastard.

  9. Judy Poel says:

That is heartbreaking how someone can do that how would he feel if all of his loved ones walked out on him and left him with nothing sooner or later KARMA

  10. ellen cottone says:

nerves of steel and heart of ice..
thats what it takes to walk away from a crying, pleading child .

  11. pamela bolton says:

This makes me so angry I cant see straight. It is no harder to care for two dogs as it is for one. I have 6 and it is NEVER in the realm of possibilities to do this to ANY of my dogs. This is a SUB-HUMAN for doing this to that dog. She love them with all she is and they treat her like this. Shame on both of you. I would take her in a heartbeat, whether I have 6 dogs or not. Why is it that ALL THE BAD THINGS THAT HAPPEN TO DOGS ARE IN CALIFORNIA? Doesn’t sound like much of a state to live in. Prayers to you Miss Mia. I love you already and I am in North Carolina.

    • Madelon Mulder says:

Pamela, I don’t think it’s a certain state where these kind of things happens. You said even with 6 that you would take her in a heartbeat. Please consider to really do that. Thanks.

  12. Lynn says:

Sometimes I can hardly believe how cruel people are to innocent animals. He has now taken everything from her!! Everything…my heart hurts for this precious little girl. :'(

  13. Peggy Ellison says:

This is a SOB. He should never be able to have an animal-how callous. What kind of home is Pepper going to live in?

  14. D bennett says:

Nasty bitch should not bet let any animals they for LIFE not till you feel you don’t won’t anymore why do we continue to let this happen make bitch pay for the dog she left behind and don’t let her have the other dog and never let have a any animal ever again get real with these SCUME or they continue to do this over @ over

  15. Olga says:

I’m so sorry baby this is extreme betrayal and you took her best friend/ family away not her and play with her then abandon please someone with a heart and soul love this baby so much she will forget this like a bad dream

  16. Mary L. Strong says:

Yorkies are wonderful little dogs. Great for senior citizens. 6 years is not old! If I didn’t have the # allowed by my HOA, I be right there! I had a wonderful Yorkie, named KC & miss him every day!

  17. Kathleen Drude says:

I dont understand how you just walk away from your little ones! When you get a pet its for the life of that pet, not until you dont want them anymore! If there are multiple pets same rules apply, and you dont leave one behind and take the other! Dogs feel emotions intensely and loss is one they usually dont get over! I hope Mia is adopted by someone who understands!

  18. Jacqueline says:

Why the hell do shelters allow this? Take her other dog too and put them on a list as animal abusers!!!!! these people do not deserve to have a dog

    • dianaroby02 says:

Why do shelters allow this? What are they suppose to do, say if you don’t take both you can’t have either. Guess what would happen then. Both would be left and facing being destroyed. No matter how wrong, shelters have no other choice. You might want to work with your local shelter about their policies regarding owner surrenders. Who knows, it might catch on.

  19. Patty says:

Sick fucker. I hope you rot in hell. They should not have let him take the other one. They don’t deserve any animals! !! Poor Mia. I’m praying you find a good loving home that deserves to have you. Rot in hell you son of a bitch. Karma will get you!

  20. Tracy Whitcomb says:

So why the hell dis you let him play with her and then take the other one. This is total BULLSHIT. He should have been charged with abandonment. He needs to have his dumb ass thrown in a prison cell and left there to rot.

    • Janet Johnson says:

Oh please do, i’d take her in a minute, but live in Indiana and have 4 of my own. Someone please take this precious baby.

  21. Madelon Mulder says:

He said a familymember surrender her. I’m wondering if Mia lived with this asshole at home or that she was a dog from for example this assholes sister or something and the dogs been together very much. It doesn’t look that this asshole was her owner wich not make it less hard. He should get her out of there and find a home for her, because she’s wasn’t welcome in her former house. A new owner is better than the kill shelter.
This man is just heartless and had the nerve to even pet her. After he walke away she was trying to get away by getting under the fence.
How can people be so heartless? This man it THE proove of it!

  22. Madelon Mulder says:

This man is a asshole and Mia’s owner didn’t had the nerve to bring her her of himself to the shelter!

  23. Jojo says:

Please get this to the inbred jerk that walked out on Mia. We’ll find you dude and make your life miserable. Hate your kind!????

  24. leah Masterson says:

there is a special place in hell for her former owner. So happy she was rescued by Big Bones in Colorado.

  25. Christine Brown says:

that was a gut wrenching video to watch. I hope that she will find another owner soon. This scum bag of a owner she had taken both of the dogs with them instead of leaving Mia behind.

  26. Melissa Gurley says:

Makes me sick she should of not been allowed to take the other dog wish I lived close I would take her in a minute please find a good home for her and don’t put her down

  27. Charvey says:

This is heartbroken. I wish I can have Mia. I will love her and never leave her behind. I have 3 furbabies and 2 of them were rescued. I love my furbabies. But sorry Mia Im too far from you. All I can do for you is to pray that someone touches their heart so they can give you a furever loving home.

  28. texag572015 says:

What a sorry excuse for a man. I pray the little will soon be adopted. I believe that sorry excuse for a human being will get what he deserves, and I hope it is very soon.

  29. Donna Brown says:

I am curious, didn’t the shelter wonder WHY?? If he couldn’t take both then he should NOT have been allowed to leave with one!

  30. Sandra Argudo says:

heart breaking these people should have not been allow to reclaim. an adoption form should have been filled out first. the shelter is to blame for the heart break of mia when they allow for them to come back and reclaim. i don’t know of any shelter that will let you reclaim an animal once is turned over to them, especially when the reason for turning them over is because they don’t have the time. no thumbs up for this shelter.

  31. Marlene Pangrac says:

This is so heartless!!! This cruel person should
never have been allowed back in the kennel
where Mia was!!! Please someone go get MIA
Out of this Lancaster Shelter!!! Her heart has
been broken twice by the same heartless person who should have NEVER been allowed
to reclaim Pepper, the other dog!!! Pleading for
a compassionate caring person to get this
sweet girl out of this loud lonely shelter without
much human touch and few hugs!!! Her ID is
A5067363 Call the shelter at 661-940-4191 to
    inquire about her!!!????????????????????????????????

  32. Dee says:

Was she definitely rescued by BIG BONES rescue in colorado???? Plse UPDATE ON this precious betrayed lil Baby Girl Mia!!!

  33. Irene Mason says:

Thats heart breaking and disgusting. Has the owner no shame at all, excuse me what an arrogant bastard he is!! This infutiates me to the maximum. Time for one dog but not the other how cruel and absolutely sad. Dont have time for people like this.

  34. Corrine Hosker says:

Wait a minute it says a family member surrendered. If it was his dogs then no one else would surrender. Maybe it broke his heart leaving them there but he can only afford or have space for one. If these werent his dogs originally then why is he being attacked? I feel sorry for the little girl left behind and wish I could have a dog or else I would snap her up. X

  35. Bec says:

The shelter is as much at fault as the owner for allowing him to see Mia when they knew he did not want her. That poor baby’s only world was ripped out from under her and she has no idea what’s going on. She’s scared and probably thinks she did something bad to be put in this place.. I sure hope someone adopts her and fills her life with love and happiness.

  36. Rob says:

The shelter is also wrong as much as the owner is. The owner stated that works to much and doesn’t have time for the animal. Why the f*CK would you let the owner walk out the door with one dog and not the other. The shelter should have held on to both dogs and let them be adopted out together rather then one leave with a P.O.S owner that is incompetent to take care of animal’s. I hope this lil girl finds a home and a family worthy of her love! Appearently the owner and the shelter don’t care one damn bit! WHAT A DISGRACE!

  37. Cynthia Vanderwall says:

Hopefully someone checks on Peppers fate. What’s to say he won’t bring that dog back? This is so unfair. I am so glad she was rescued. This was so hard to watch but, obviously someone cared enough to help.

  38. Frances Hinely says:

I pray it is true that she’s been rescued. If not ….. is there a way to get her to Pensacola FL? I will give her a loving forever home!

  39. DT says:

Oh…how easy it is to judge people. After many years dealing with people that can’t or won’t keep their dogs…I find most find homes and have a great life…You don’t know what has happened to someone…financial or anything else that comes up! Life is like this…why today we find it so easy to rip someone apart…Kindness…just a little!

  40. Dawn Eaton says:

It’s literally heartbreaking to watch this video!!! I am so angry at the person who came and got Mia’s companion (after putting his hand under her cage no less!!) AND the shelter- why would you allow them to be seperated???? If these people didn’t have time for both dogs and treated them like this, what the hell makes you think they will treat Mia’s companion well? Do you NOT think Mia’s companion won’t be heartbroken too? To ALL the people expressing interest in taking Mia- THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!! Praying that Mia finds a wonderful loving generous forever home????????❤️❤️????????????????❤️❤️????????

  41. Jimmy Dantonio says:

Reading the title infuriated me. Watching the video had me hysterically crying holding my dog. There’s not a thing in this world that could force me to do that to my dog. My heart is broken for Mia but thankfully she was rescued. In my fit of tears I felt the need to call the shelter, mostly in hopes of hearing the shelter employees shamed this piece of shit human for abandoning Mia like that. The did inform me that Mia was adopted on May 19th so she has her happy ending. Obviously in a home where she will be loved, unlike the last one. I hope that person rots in hell.

  42. Alyssa H. says:

This is bullcrap! That a hole should be charged and he shouldnt even be aloud to have the other dog, who knows where pepper will end up thwn…how can anyone do this! If i worked there i would have snapped on him! I wish i could take little Mia! Poor baby! Please someone take this sweet baby in!

  43. Toni Eastman says:

Oh yeah dogs don’t have feelings or understanding, That loser creep!! He’s should NEVER been able to take one nor both! At the shelter I volunteer at if you surrender a pet you will never adopt from our shelter. They are bonded and should never been taken apart….they had been through enough!

  44. Barkley's Mom says:

If they work such long hours they don’t have time for Mia, then they don’t have time for Pepper either! How does someone with any kind of heart do this? I hope they burn in Hell!

  45. Angela Corso says:

I also tried to find out this puppies fate, but received the same error notification. An update is needed. Thanks.
