On Sunday, a dam north of Hankamer, Texas, was opened and the rising water flooded a shelter housing dozens of cats and dogs. Dallas DogRRR – Rescue.Rehab.Reform. issued an emergency plea as soon as they learned that their partner rescue, Tall Tails Animal Rescue, was in danger:

*** 9 1 1 ***

This is our partner rescue down in Houston. We have several dogs in medical boarding there!

The rescue agency explained what happened:

We are in serious need of help! They opened the dam north of us and we got over a foot of water overnight…and it’s still rising! They’re going to release more water from upstream and more rain is on the horizon.

Thanks to the efforts of social media users, the authorities and other facilities in the area were alerted to the dire situation. As of 8:30 p.m. (local time), the latest on the flooded situation was posted to Facebook:

Here is what we know. One more load of dogs has been removed from the house. Waiting on a number on how many are remaining. The dogs left are inside of the house and the house had not taken on any water.

They are being brought to the park. Trailers are needed to get the dogs to safety. They have no supplies they left with dogs in crates are the clothes on their backs. They need dog bowls, leashes, dog food, cat food, blankets, towels etc.

The final update on Monday evening was made at 10 p.m. (local time):

Kat & Kevin are alive- They have lost everything and only have the clothes on their backs- they took no personal belongings and their rescue vehicle is gone. They were able to get 15 more dogs out from the compound and Kevin and a battle buddy have just hopped in another boat to get more of the dogs and bring them back to the field off 61 at the pavilion.
