Man fatally attacked by dog

Update 4/26/17: The victim has been identified as 60-year-old Maurice Brown.

A man in Dayton, Ohio, was fatally mauled by a dog who broke free from its chain in the early morning hours on Tuesday. According to NBC4i News, the middle-aged man, who is described as an “innocent victim” in this tragic incident, was walking in an alley around 4:40 a.m. when the dog broke free from a chain and launched an attack.

Residents in the area could hear the man’s screams for help, as well as the sounds of dogs barking, but help did not arrive in time. When the authorities arrived, the man was found with severe injuries – he was transported to an area hospital and pronounced dead.

A search was instigated for the dog responsible – after the police found the suspected dog, they shot him to death. Three other dogs were found on the same property where the attack took place – the dogs have been removed and taken to animal control, but an owner has not yet been found.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released.

Long-term chaining of dogs is known to cause frustration and aggression – in many cities, prolonged tethering of dogs is against the law.

  1. Something is odd to me. The innocent victim was mauled in an alleyway, very sad, for all involved. ..when you continue reading they found 3 more dogs where the attack took place…so there were 4 dogs chained in an alley. ..
Very sad that a human was attacked and died….and the poor dog was shot dead due to a moron owner that had him tethered. Very very sad. Rest in peace pupper.

  2. People have been calling for laws to prevent caning up a dog and you have done nothing. The owner should face murder charges. I have issues with the murder of a dog if you do not have hard evidence against the dog. I pray for the human victims family. They should sue the dog owner

    • That dog was still mauling the man when they arrived. How much more proof do you want?
Maybe some of you should venture off this site once in awhile and check the other reports on these stories.

      • I am an animal rights advocate. About two years ago a man contacted me requesting my assistance. He had three dogs who had attacked people twice. The most recent event concerned a man who was simply walking down the street. The dogs escaped from the owner’s yard and injured the man badly. He had to be hospitalized. Witnesses who rescued him claimed the dogs would have killed him without their intervention. The courts ruled the dogs be relinquished. The owner was defying a court order and asking for my help. I researched the case and truly believed the dogs were vicious and could not be rehabilitated. I advised the owner to obey the court order and surrender the dogs as animal behaviour experts considered the dogs to be extremely dangerous. I actually begged the owner to give the dogs up – not only because of the legal repercussions he was facing but because I feared for his and other’s safety. He refused. Within a week I received word that the man’s three beloved dogs had attacked and killed him! This case hurt me worse than any I was ever involved with. I cry every time I speak of this or write about it. Some animals cannot be rehabilitated. There is an animal behaviour specialist named Dr. Ian Dunbar. He has published an official Bite Assessment Scale that professionals use to determine if an animal can be rehabilitated or if they are simply too dangerous and unpredictable. I love animals but I love people more.

      • The article did not say the dog was still mauling the man when they arrived, so sorry my comment offended you. I am not apologizing as I stand behind my comment.

  3. I have some questions about this story. The attack took place in an alley at about 4:40 a.m. and 3 more dogs were found at the same property where the attack took place. So was the this man attacked in the yard where the dog who attacked and or was it in the alley as first stated?
Now if this took place in an alley how can there be another scene where the attack took place?
Why didn’t anyone try to help this man?
Do you think this dog could have been protecting him yard and the another dogs?
I’m sorry both this man and dog had to die, but there is more questions to this story than what’s being put out there.

    • Dogs were tied up in their yard which was by an alley. Dog broke free, ran off its property into the alley, mauled the man to death and you are making excuses. It wasn’t protecting the house. The man was innocently walking in the alley by the house.
You are unbelievable and should be ashamed. I only feel sorry for the man, not an animal that VICIOUSLY mauled a PERSON to DEATH. He was CRYING and SCREAMING “Jesus, help me” for 3 to 5 min. A neighbor heard him and called 911. He SUFFERED and was TERRIFIED.
Some of you people are SICK in the head! You clearly care more about a dog than a person! Poor dog?? I wonder if you would say that if he were your father or husband or son. What a disgrace! I PRAY none of his family or friends see this site and read these DISGUSTING comments!

      • Listen the way this read makes it sound like 2 different stories.
Yes I feel for this man and I also feel for any animal that is tied up 24/7 because that is an accident waiting ti happen. I was a child when I was attacked by a dog that happen and don’t you think I was terrified and suffered as well.
So yes I can question what really happened because we aren’t always told the whole story.
I’m not a shamed of what I said.

      • Sounds like you were there. The man was crying out for3-5 minutes and no one went to help? Use an air horn, a water hose, a rope, anything to help. Why was the man in an alley that early in the morning? Maybe he was up to no good. No one knows, we weren’t there, nor were we in the man’s head. Sorry it happened but there are alot of unanswered questions

      • “The siblings of 60-year-old Maurice Brown are sharing a message after their brother was mauled to death by a dog in Dayton Tuesday morning.

David Brown describes his older brother as a man who “liked to stop and smell the roses”.

Maurice was a Jefferson Township High School graduate who played in the band. He was also a United States Air Force veteran.

“He was definitely someone I looked up to,” said David.

Maurice’s sister, Angela Brown Fields says her older brother was her protector and she doesn’t understand how an innocent walk led to his death.

“Death is inevitable in this life and it’s tragic, but to hear the manner of his death was an instant shock,” said David, who drove from North Carolina for funeral planning.

David says his brother liked to look at the stars and go to concerts. It doesn’t surprise him Maurice was up around 4:30 in the morning on a random Tuesday.

“That’s how we remember him, artistic. Most of the world is rigid and on a schedule. He was a non-schedule type. He enjoyed the world at its quietest,” said David.

Maurice loved to play drummers and performed alongside bands like the Ohio Players and Slave.

The Dayton Police Department is investigating the case. The Brown family hopes justice is served soon.

“This could have been a child walking to school, mauled to death. It could have been anyone, it just happens to be my brother. These dogs are bred, bred for that trait of being vicious and you should be held accountable if you cannot control them,” said David. “

You are disgusting. That dog didn’t need to be brutally shot down. Were you there? Do you know if the man was harming the animal? No you do not. You must be a vicious vile person. Bitch

And THIS is exactly what I’m talking about. Victim blaming? REALLY? You “people” are more concerned about an ANIMAL than a human life. The dog was brutally shot down, E? THAT’S what bothers you? How about the MAN who was VICIOUSLY MAULED TO DEATH!?
And you say I’M disgusting? Seriously, you guys need to THINK about what you are saying.
        #WONTBACKDOWN

      • pennysdachshund – feel better about yourself now? NASTY name calling coming from your mouth. You sound evil.
You are (partly) right about one thing….I hate dogs – but only those THAT MAUL INNOCENT PEOPLE. If my husband or son or brother was mauled to death like this man, and I saw these comments where people felt bad for that dog, I would be CRUSHED.
And you can call me every name in the book BUT it won’t stop me from advocating against vicious animals who kill people. Why? Because IT’S WRONG.

      • You are disgusting. That dog didn’t need to be brutally shot down. Were you there? Do you know if the man was harming the animal? No you do not. You must be a vicious vile person. Bitch

      • Why should we care about people?? Look what humans have done and continue to do to this world I’m sorry but that owner should be held accountable as well I hope you don’t have pets

    • BS. You should be ashamed for actually trying to place blame on the innocent victim.
Dogs being mistreated is wrong BUT IT’S NO EXCUSE FOR MURDER. They shouldn’t get a free pass to maul and kill innocent people because of it. People come first and are more important. PERIOD.

      • Well if this emotionally , physically , nutritionally, dog has been chained, deprived of food & water for a long period by the Buzzard Vomit So-Called Owner… how would you expect the animal act… sit up and ask the like human who had treated him/her in this fashion to go get him some water and a Happy McDonald’s meal…. I really feel for the poor man that was killed and his family, BUT I am totally PISSED that the Riff-Raff Scum Buckets in that pathetic city & STATE. didn’t contact the authorities, police, HSUS, Animal Control, to help those misfortunate animals…. of IF SOMEONE ACTUALLY DID FOLLUP IF THIS CONTINUED!!!

      • BS Marie, no one is blaming the victim or the dog. WE BLAME THE DOGS OWNER. THAT IS WHO SHOULD BE ON MURDER CHARGES

      • It is bitter nasty things like you that allow child killers to walk around while demanding innocent animals be killed. You are pathetic

      • THANK YOU for “OWNING UP TO THE FACT YOU HATE DOG’S!!! So why are you on a Site WHERE 99.9 of the posting is done by Dogs LOVER’s and ADOVACATES !!! To bad mouth the writers that REALLY WORK hard to PROVIDE as accurate INFORMATION as they HAVE and to TRY and SAVE the lives of MANY DISPLACED DOGS and OTHER NEEDY ANIMALS AS they CAN> YOU are a DISPICABLE INDIVIDUAL…. PERSON and HAVE NO COMPASSION for the HORRIFIC TREATMENT ,TORTURE< MAMING MANY of these Animals (DOGS ESPECIALLY) go thru to make them strike out a HUMAN BEING… Look what the Michael Vick PITS suffered and they were able to be rehabilitated…. II CAN A.MOST SEE YOU OUT THERE HELPING THOSE 12 7 15 year old's BURNING A DOG ALIVE !! YES YOU ARE RIGHT YOU DO HATE DOGS & YOURSELF!!!

      • My comment – AGREED – was actually in response to you. I don’t know why it was put under Penny’s name.

      • Marie – It happened again! My comment – AGREED – was actually in response to you.

    • Lisa, no. It sounds like I read more than this one article and gathered all the facts. Maybe you should try it sometime.

    • pennysdachshund….BS. If the dog was THAT bad it wouldn’t have had the strength to maul a full grown man to death, never mind being able to break its chain. But I have no doubt that is exactly how you see it. Keep using your imagination though. Apparently it’s much easier for you than actually doing a search for the other dozen or so sites that are giving out more info.

      • Listen YOU sanctimonious cunt WE are allowed to have an opinion as to what happened… After ALL This is STILL the USA land of free speech… YOU have no NEED in attacking me! MY opinion is you are a dog hater…. I don’t have to read a dozen sites for the facts. I have TRUST in Penny and Cheryl.

      • Maybe everyone doesn’t have the amount of time you apparently have on your hands you sanctimonious, narcissist animal hater! MY OPINION of YOU is that your are a socialist and have YOU forgotten this is the USA , not North KOREA, more than JUST YOU can form an opinion!!!! I for ONE don’t have to read other sites. I am very pleased with the writers of PET RESCUE REPORT…

      • Marie this BS you keep trolling us and keep trying to say we said it’s this guys fault!!!! NO IT’S NOT HIS FAULT OR THE DOGS, BUT THE OWNERS FAULT ANY WAY YOU LOOK AT IT!!!! So need to educate yourself when it comes to science. A Rottweilers bite force way stronger than American Pit Terriers. Any large breed of dog has the strength to brake a chain that is either weakened over time or not strong enough for this dog. So please stop trolling us and let us have our right to exercise our freedom of speech and question things that sound off to us!!!!

      • Just because you read different articles doesn’t mean you got all the correct facts!!!! So please stop trolling us and trying to tell us what we should or shouldn’t be!!!!! You need to realize you really don’t know who you are running your mouth off to. We are intitled to make ANY OPINION WE WANT BECAUSE WE ARE THINKING THINGS SOUND OFF ABOUT THIS STORY.
ALSO EDUCATE YOURSELF ABOUT SCIENCE. Any large breed dog can brake a chain that not strong enough for them or either been worn down overtime. Also did know (what am I thinking you wouldn’t know because you’re a simple) a Rottweiler’s bite force of 328 pounds of bite pressure and a America Pit Bull Terrier’s and a German Shepherd’s is 235 pounds of bite pressure. A Mastiff’s pounds of bite pressure is 552. With saying this any large breed can maul any one, but if it was any other breed of dog you would have heard “man fatally attacked by dog. They will sell more papers and people like you Marie will think because they read more of those articles you know more.
We have all concluded that the ONLY PERSON TO BLAME IS THE OWNER AND NOT THE VICTIM OR THE MISTREATED DOG.

    • Susan…that’s right. You have your freedom of speech. And SO DO I. You don’t want me to say anything? Then stop talking to me. But when I see someone say something I don’t agree with (like “poor dog” after it brutally mauled a man to death) or someone insinuating the man may have done something wrong, you can bet your ass I’m going to speak up. I’m not afraid of you, and you’re not going to bully me into shutting up.

You have no idea what these attacks are like. How do I know that? BECAUSE YOU FEEL BAD FOR THE ANIMAL. These type of dog attacks resemble shark attacks. That’s how violent they are. Don’t believe me? Look it up. That elderly 82 year old woman who was mauled by two pit bulls just a few weeks ago, had her head nearly decapitated. Do you feel bad for those dogs too? Or the little boy who had his face mauled off, in NY…I suppose you feel bad for that dog too? And these accounts of vicious maulings and killings go on, and on and on.

Pit bulls kill and disfigure more people and pets THAN ALL OTHER DOGS COMBINED. We are not talking about “bites”, it’s mauling/disfiguring/killing. That guy SUFFERED. And some of you are worried about how the dog was treated? Seriously? Or maybe the dog was just protecting its yard? Or the other dogs? And why was that guy walking there? And what was he doing out so early? Maybe he was in the yard? Oh, and let’s not forget to blame the police for being trigger happy and “murdering” the “poor dog”. The fact that some of you don’t realise that what you are saying is wrong is disturbing. YOU ARE ACTUALLY LOOKING FOR EXCUSES TO JUSTIFY THIS DOG KILLING A MAN. I bet you even think the “poor dog” shouldn’t have been shot. Maybe it could have been rehabilitated and sent off to some other family.

It’s one thing to care about animals that are mistreated, beaten or neglected. But when you can say “poor dog” right next to “poor man” KNOWING THAT “SAME” ANIMAL VICIOUSLY MAULED A MAN TO DEATH is low. You might as well go to that man’s funeral and tell his family: “I am SO sorry for your loss. It was such a tragedy. And I feel so bad for the dog. It was mistreated.”

      • YOU DOGBITE.ORG SUPPORTING CUNT IF YOU WOULD READ WHAT WE ARE SAYING YOU WOULD GET IT!!!!!! YOU ARE TRYING TO BULLY US INTO BE A SHAME OF OUR BELIEF!!!!!!!!! BY THE WAY TO MOST ABUSE DOG OUT THERE ARE BULLY BREEDS!!!!!! I NEVER SAID POOR DOG IF YOU READ WHAT I SAID IS MISTREATED DOG!!!!! ALSO YOU ARE TO STUPID TO GET THE POINT WE KEEP SAYING “THE OWNER IS TO BLAME NOT THE MAN WHO WAS ATTACKED” YOU SIMP!!!!! YOU ALSO IGNORE THE FACT THE WORD “MAUL” IS ONLY USED WHEN IT INVOLVES A BULLY BREED DOG!!!!!! I LOOK AT THE WHOLE FACTS TO SEE WHERE THESE DOGS GOT TO THIS LEVEL BECAUSE IT DIDN’T JUST HAPPEN IN ONE DAY!!!!!

PIT BULL ISN’T A TYPE OF DOG IT’S A CATEGORY.
Pit bull is the common name for a type of dog. Formal breeds often considered in North America to be of the pit bull type include the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Bully, and Staffordshire Bull Terrier.[1] The American Bulldog is also sometimes included.

Honey, I hate dogs that MAUL/KILL innocent people/children/pets. And the fact that you don't is disgusting.
I research these maulings on a daily basis, and that's how I found this article. My sympathy goes to the VICTIMS. You victim hater.

M VIKS dogs is what started the pit bull trend. They were NEVER meant to be PETS. Why do you think they call them PIT BULLS?

      • The raising of pit bulls for dog fighting started way before M. Vic. He didn’t start the “pit bull trend” he just got caught doing it.

  4. A chained dog is an accident waiting to happen. The owner should be prosecuted Can you imagine what kind of life a dog has being chained 24/7 Its inhumane and where I live its against the law

  5. Do not blame the dog, he was not at fault. The dogs owner mistreated this poor dogs and the other 3 dogs. They were abused badly. This bastard owner needs the death penalty. How dare these repulsive, uneducated oinker yank pig cops kill this poor dog!Yank oinker pig cops have a disgraceful international reputation. They are well known as animal murderers!

    • I suspect you are right – something stinks in Dayton Ohio in addition to the cops. The whole story is not being told – I agree these dogs were mistreated by some maggot owner and that as usual, the out of control cops shoot a dog – WHY were these dogs ‘chained’ outside at 4am. The dog may have been protecting his territory – there are a lot of questions BUT the cops will sit behind that big blue wall and lie, lie, lie. Common practice. Sorry someone died, but no one stepped up fast enough – again, as usual.

    • Pet rescue seems to have conveniently left out a few important details. This is what several news sites are saying:
“The call for help came in around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. Officers arrived on scene a short time later.
The dog was there still attacking the individual. The dog then went into the backyard of 345 Middle St. When the officers went over there, there was no way to safely confine the dog for the Animal Resource Center, so they ended up having to dispatch that dog,” Lt. Andrew Booher with the Dayton Police Department said.”

      • I love animals. That’s why I’m an animal rights advocate. I was one of the few animal rights advocates who worked closely with the FBI to pass a law to make animal abuse a Class A federal felony as of January 1, 2016. But facts are facts. Some animals are dangerous and vicious. There is a document entitled Dr. Ian Dunbar’s Bite Assessment Scale people can download online. Dangerous human criminals exist – just as dangerous animals, including dogs exist. A few years back a Pomeranian dog savaged an infant’s face so badly that she died. Any person or dog has a potential to be aggressive, given the right circumstances. We don’t know all the facts concerning this case but a person died. They suffered and died in a horrible manner. The fact that they were calling out to Jesus gives me some hope that they are now safe and secure with our Lord and Saviour. Please stop the fighting, name calling and profanity. That solves nothing.

I honestly believe we each have a purpose in this life. Some advocate for animals, others for people, children and so on. If we all advocated for one thing this world would be a lot more messed up than it already is. I really admire you for advocating for animals. They need all the help they can get. My specialty just happens to be the victims of pit bull attacks. That’s my passion/calling. The trauma that family is going through right now is literally torture. And it really hits a nerve with me when anyone can feel bad for a dog who murders a person. I’ve seen it all, heard it all, read it all. I know I shouldn’t let it get to me, but when you deal with it everyday it’s hard to ignore sometimes I guess. I suspect you know what I’m talking about.
Thank you for what you said (stop fighting -it solves nothing). That helped. At least right now, for this situation.

      • Marie – I’ve been getting into trouble my whole life for my mouth. So, here goes: There are four types of dogs that are considered to be pit bulls: American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Bull Dogs and/or any dog mixed with one or more of the above breeds. These dogs are responsible for 64% of fatal dog attacks. They were bred to have a desire to fight, surprise attack victims, have a deadly bite, hold and shake/mutilate (the only other animal that does this in nature is a shark – Marie is correct) – other dogs bite and release – these dogs savage, tear and mutilate their victims, have a high threshold for pain tolerance, have tremendous jaw strength, gameness, and will actually fight to their and other animals/people’s death. The other most dangerous dogs are Rottweilers, Wolf hybrids, Huskies and German Shepherds.
I am big on truth. You’ve heard the phrase that the truth will set you free? Well, the truth is that sometimes people are the bad guys and sometimes animals are the bad guys. Pit Bull dogs were simply bred to fight. Ones who won’t fight are abused, abandoned, tortured, killed and/or used for bait dogs. Some dogs can be rehabilitated. Some can’t. I urge you to Google Dr. Ian Dunbar’s Bite Assessment Scale. Dogs deemed dangerous and vicious that cannot be rehabilitated are better off being euthanized because they are absolutely miserable in solitary confinement.
Let’s remember that we are here to protect the innocent and vulnerable – the victims and channel our righteous anger against the bad guys – be they people or be they animals.

      • Rev. Dr. Yvonne Ray…100% correct information and very well said. I just hope you aren’t given a hard time on my account.
And I will Google that title -though it sounds familiar. I may have read it before but I’m not quite sure.

I’m still learning as I go along. What I really have to work on is not letting my emotions get the best of me (obviously). It’s always been hard for me. “A soft answer turns away wrath but a harsh word stirs up anger” – I KNOW THIS but yet I didn’t think about it until YOU said something. You made me stop and realize what I was doing. Thank you for that.

      • Marie – I have been called names, had profanity used at me, cursed, threatened and tried to be banned from this site because of my “preaching”. They were actually much tougher on me than you. I am used to hate mail, profanity, name calling and threats – including death threats – because I present the simple plan of salvation on Facebook and Craig’s list. I am also a very unpolitically correct Christian political activist – especially against animal abuse and protecting animal rights. If I didn’t receive hate mail, I’d know I was doing something wrong. Ha! I am actually perplexed that they have been going easy on me lately. But, the truth is the truth and we can’t let our feelings stand in the way of facts. As I said, sometimes people are the bad guys and sometimes animals are. My ex sister-in-law had her face savaged so badly by her beloved rescue Rottweiler. She has to have extensive reconstructive surgery. I had another ex sister-in-law that had to return a dog because he could not be rehabilitated. I know people on this site have a tremendous love for animals. So do I. The only thing my late mother – a tremendously abusive person and the single most detrimental influence in my life – ever wrote in my baby book was that I loved all animals and had no fear of any. That was the one and only comment she made. After that, it was too much effort to write anything else as she never wanted a child and made sure I was always aware of that fact. But, as I said, the truth shall set you free. Keep up the good work and we on this site will keep fighting the good fight for God’s most innocent and vulnerable creations.

      • Rev. Dr. Yvonne Ray…You have been through a lot! I can’t imagine not having my mother’s love, but you do seem like a very well rounder person. Strong? I’m so sorry that happened to you though. It’s VERY sad.
Yup…my 10 yr old nephew was attacked by a pb just a little over 10 months ago. It not only affects them deeply physically but mentally as well. And not only the victim but loved ones.

      • I’m glad to know about the two hour limit but I wouldn’t tether at all. A lot can happen in two unsupervised hours.

      • Rev. I agree, but, it’s better than most states. Most states don’t have chained/tethered restrictions.

      • Linda, Surprise! Surprise! Guess where we activists have encountered the most resistance to dog anti tethering laws? The South! And, before anyone gets all bent out of shape that I’m slinging mud on one region of the country – my whole family is Southern but the truth is the truth.

      • I didn’t name what states did I?, However, Robin Unchained Dogs have rescued many dogs from the southern states that owners have kept their dogs chained and tethered 24/7.

      • Mike, I know that. The point I was making is that we have received more resistance against anti tethering/chaining laws in the South than anywhere. That’s simply a fact.

(I know of dogsbite but I’m not from there)

      • Marie….thank you for owning up to your faults as that’s a very hard pill to swallow. I should have never lowered myself to name calling as well. As I will call any person without thinking including my own family when they are to quick to judge as well. I’ve always been and will always be out spoken.
Yes this a very touchy subject for me as a bully breed owner and have been one for years I’ve bee ridiculed for that as well as praised. Once you own one you will always in your heart know they are great dogs, but very bad people will own them so many wrong reasons!!! The ones who own them for fighting, status, to look tough, and for other stupid reasons(not as a pet or part of the family) always abuse, mistreat, torture, starve, and other terrible things. So with saying that now you know why I will forever and always fight for this breed. Please look up the positive stories on them before rushing to a harsh judgement to quickly.
The reason why I said you sound like dogbite. org support is how worded your comments which sounded just like how they word condemning of people who are bully breed lovers. I have dealt with the fucking idiots online as well in person. They are so closed minded it’s sickening. They are nancy dirgrace followers as well because. That bitch calls this breed devil dogs, but doesn’t look at all the facts, but what she wants people to know.
Please look at what we were saying about this article. As you can see we all feel bad the victim, his family, and the mistreated dog. We also think the person that need to be accountable is the owner of the dog(s).
Please do me a favor if you ever see a bully breed dog as the owner if you pet their dog an if they say ok, look and see how love that dog will spill out from their big boxy head to their whip like tail.

        Thank you
