A man in Levittown, New York, is accused of a heinous act of animal cruelty against his dog. According to Wednesday’s CBS News, witnesses observed 56-year-old Michael Gallagher repeatedly bludgeoning his senior German shepherd mix with a shovel in December – those who observed the beating confronted the man, and claim that he showed no emotion before fleeing the scene.
Gallagher is accused of first attempting to strangle the dog with zip ties before putting her into a trash bag and beating her again and again with a shovel. The 11-year-old dog, named “Bella,” was so grievously wounded that the veterinarian decided that humane euthanasia was the only option to end her suffering.
Gallagher is facing a multitude of charges for the cruel incident, including aggravated cruelty to animals, overdriving and failure to provide proper sustenance, among other related charges; he has pleaded not guilty and is due back in court in March.
According to the New York Daily News, Gallagher, a plumber for New York City schools, was reported to be drunk when the beating took place.
