Nurses reunited puppy with hospitalized owner

After a truck driver suffered a medical emergency and had to be hospitalized, two of his nurses saved the day when they were able to get his puppy, who had been traveling with him before he was taken away in an ambulance to the University of Iowa Hospital, from an area shelter.

According to KCCI News, when Robert Prichard suffered a medical emergency and was hospitalized, his pup, “Bandit,” was taken to the Cedar Bend Humane Society. From the hospital, Prichard phoned the shelter daily to make sure that staff knew that his puppy needed to be taken care of until he was able to retrieve him.

Before Prichard was released, the animal shelter notified him that the puppy’s time was up – if Bandit wasn’t retrieved, he would be put up for adoption.

Enter the two compassionate nurses – when they heard about Prichard’s situation, they took it upon themselves to drive over an hour to the animal shelter and spring Bandit from the humane society. Nurse Erin Niles explained, “I didn’t think it was really fair for someone to lose their animal just because they were in the hospital, so I wanted to do everything I could.”

Prichard is filled with gratitude over the selfless act of kindness that reunited him with his beloved pup. He told the news agency, “I appreciate it, and nobody has ever treated or helped me like these people have. The main thing is I got my buddy back.”

You have a personal experience in bringing a beloved dog to his dying human. It is even more touching and done years ago. Loyal home pets and infirmed humans need the benefits of each other’s company.
I think you should sit down and share the experience with pet rescue report. They have sent a shout out about interesting human/pet stories.
Your story is important and a little ahead of its time. Maybe change can come from it. Maybe pet hospital visitation can be a thing.

  3. people in that shelter need to be fucking fired, they are the most useless pieces of shit ive ever heard of, who takes a medical emergency patients pet and instead of telling guy no problem they will watch after pet, but instead tell him times up, I hope someone beats the living crap out of the person who made the decision

  4. Thank goodness Bandit was reunited with his owner. Shame on Cedar Bend Humane Society for being impatient. After all Mr. Prichard called daily to keep tabs on Bandit. I guess the word HUMANE doesn’t apply to this organization!

  5. What wonderful nurses to get this man’s dog and bring Bandit to him. Shame on the shelter for not having a heart and threatening to adopt out Mr Pritchard;s dog, He was ill and in the hospital, He had been calling daily to check on his dog! Certainly the rules could be bent for this! They knew the situation and couldn’t help out Mr Pritchard? What kind of “shelter” are they running there, certainly not a compassionate one!

  6. what the hell is wrong with those shelter people, the man called each day about his pup, and finally they said if the pup wasn’t picked up, it would be put up for adoption. the owner was in the hospital and he wanted his dog back. are the shelter folks brain dead?

    • You are absolutely right – a fine example of a shelter that was way too willing to ignore a man’s plight – HUGE black eye for the Cedar Bend Humane Society for their uncaring attitude – GIANT THANK YOU to the nurses who took it upon themselves to make sure Mr. Pritchard got Bandit back.
