‘Not friendly enough’: Owners dump young Great Dane at crowded shelter

Gonner is a one-year-old Great Dane. On April 10, he was surrendered to the shelter at Carson Animal Care because he was “not friendly enough.” Perhaps it was a mystery to his previous owners that dogs don’t train themselves to become good canine citizens. Sadly his previous family weren’t even responsible enough to have Gonner neutered.

And so he sits in the back of the shelter with no kennel card which means he is not available for adoption from the general public. A volunteer offered the following information:

“GONNER is big and beautiful and his family left him at the shelter because he wasn’t friendly enough. He has that collar over his face, and you can see it’s raw underneath and if you give him a cookie he is extremely gentle and sweet. He needs help fast, he’s in the back with no Kennel Card! He will need someone with experience and someone to give him training.”

The dog’s Pet Harbor listing can be found here. “My name is Gonner and I am described as a neutered male, blue merle Great Dane. The shelter thinks I am about 1 year and 1 month old. I have been at the shelter since Apr 10, 2017.” For more information about this animal, call Los Angeles County Animal Control – Carson at (310) 523-9566. Ask for information about animal ID number A5048803. A Facebook page to follow this boy’s plight can be found here. He must undergo a temperament test which has to be requested in person before the shelter will allow Gonner to be saved.

Share this young dog’s plight with approved rescue organizations, friends, family and social media contacts. Gonner only has the advocates to help.

  1. Anyone who could keep a dog ten years and then just dump him is a wicked, subhuman child of Satan. He is a cute, freckled dog that would probably be very friendly to a decent pet parent.

    • he is a puppy. who turned one on april !0th. he is a frekled cutie whos former owners thought it would be great to to have a great dane and have a dog the size of a pony.
      until reality set in

      • Linda,
i cant wait for the new family to change his name. Im thinking “tippie”” (as in tippi canoe, from timbuck tu) whats your pick?

      • Oh my god yes,
        its freckles
And if they dont clip his ears into points, he will alway have the whimsical pippy long stocking look when hes curious.
        Hilarious visual!

    • I apoligise for getting off point.

I was led away from the family i turned a corner andsaw a giant Dog smilying at me wagging his tail. he called me with a smile. everything was moving around me. (its in the desert it was hot i think i was seeing things)
I blinked and everything stopped moving.
painted stories high on the side of the tombs was a painting of saint at his feet are a dog, bird, mice and cat eating at the same dish behind him is an imfirmary. he has a broom in one hand and a crucifix in the other.

He is the patrion Saint Of…………..

      • Patti, I would be very surprised if they left the harness on after the initial photo. They like to take pix immediately to show the true unvarnished condition of the animal. Great Danes are fantastic dogs!

      • I am praying for your safe return, girl. You and I have much more squabbling to do! Ha. Ha.

    • haaa!
      im home safe. it worked!!
      THANK YOU!
Now I will sleep for 1000 days,
      squabble ya laterrrs,
      HA!! (good to be home)

  2. The owners were the problem–not Gonner. People with their mentality should not have pets (or children). Such a sad waste.

  3. These owners make me sick. Why get a puppy if you won’t put in the effort to train it? And when you’re tired of the puppy because you feel it’s too much work, you dump the poor pup in a kill shelter. These owners are worst than scum and should never be permitted to get another living animal, not even a gold fish. Poor Gonner, I’m sorry your owners are such pricks and hope you find a wonderful home that will care and love you forever. Someone from the shelter should remove his head halter while he’s kept in the cage. Head halters tend to rub the dogs’ skin every time they move around and can be very uncomfortable.

  4. He is young and scared. I live in Maryland, I would take him if he was close or there was a way to get him here. I have had rescues since 1976. I have worked with all kinds of behavior problems. What I can’t have tho are unpredicable dogs, But this guy looks like a fearful puppy, that’s all, very understandable. He should not be neutered until he reaches full growth or he will be set up for cruciate problems due to mal-alignment of the leg, the angulation is off. Pediatric neutering causes long bone growth in male and female dogs. This is particularly important in Great Danes. I fully understand the need to prevent reproduction, but I hope the facility will allow someone to adopt him and neuter him when he reaches the age of 3 years. That will allow him to be fully mature. I wish I knew I knew a relay group, I would take this puppy and put him in class ASAP. He would start to be a gentlemen in a month, a lot of love and fluffy beds, soft voices and gentle hands can turn a frightened, neglected and even mistreated dog into a trusted loving companion.

    • I agree. He shouldn’t be neutered until he reaches maturity, especially for Giant Breeds. Did the owners contacted Gonner’s breeder? Reputable breeders will take their dog/puppy back and re-home the dog. Good breeders will not want their dogs sitting in kill shelters. These breeders breed for the love of the breed and not for profit. Unfortunately, it’s hard to find reputable breeders.

      • i agree with every thing helen,
except that unfortanattly sexualy maturity often comes with out maturity, maturity.96 months to a year for big dogs, 6 months for all others.
like sexualy maturity at 15 in a human, and maturity, maturity being reached at 55 (or so).
your right their are no reputable breeders. because they dont perfect the breed they exploit the breed.and for money. with a great dane the live 7yrs to the day. thats it its tragic then the go out and buy another one and watch it die. there insane.the breed is dying out and getting weeker .its sad.

    • wow, no.
you neuter by 6 months. A dog is puppy untill 3 years but can reproduce buy 6 months. the reason why a shelter must neauter befor adopting is to register , chip and spay so this pedigree will not end up in the hands of a puppy mill. Its against the law to adopt out a an un fixed cat or dog from a shelter.
The dog has no agression or legitimate behavioral problems. all the owner said was unfriendly enough.
not a ligitimate reason for abandoning any animal. Thats about the stupidest most selfish reason iv ever herd of. they lie. he was a whim, they realized he was too big a dog for the living space
He was treated unkindly. They resented his bigness he is still a baby and was loved by his mother then plucked and thrown into a family of jack asses. he was bullied and unloved. There is nothing wrong with him.but this dog needs space andis ment for an older man and they can devote them selves to each other. The former family should have went with the first plan , a golden retreaver or a lovy mushy lap dog.
Incedentally, you could not handle this dog. he is beyond your capibility.just like it was with the former owners.
How is it you know nothing about dogs?

    • sorry my comment was ment for libby,
libby the dog just needs a good home you could use some classes in the dog 101 basics.
your letter is filled with mistakes and is cring worthy. its you who need some classes asap.
this dog is already a loving companion. because their is no indication that he isnt.

    • Highway Heroes does transports for dogs in need of being rescued….but you would have to have him pulled by a rescue from the area where he is located.

      • let us know if we can help.
on a lark call “friends of freddy medford long island Ny. speek to barbar s.
an overworked private funded rescue and adoption center director. speak to her. show her pic. See what happens . she may underground train him on out.
But i did get the feeling hes been bailed out. bailed out by a good family. either way i think you 2- should meet. shes hands on rescue. and a local animal hero.

    • cristen,
here they use a powerful tool, pictures. because if they didnt show the abuse we would not believe it.now the pic is etched into our minds for ever. I think we are expected to do something with it.
sharing is the first step in asking for help. and not looking the other way. Good you! What next?

      • I, like Ellen, believe the shelter left the halter on just for the initial picture. A reputable shelter doesn’t sugar coat a situation.

  5. mistreated, mishandled and misunderrstood.
and its He that is labled , Unfriendly . You can see it in his eyes. hes a good dog.
Treated unkindly. Buy unfriendly children and adults.
Tragic. Why havent they gotten in touch with its original home ? its mother and the original Registered breeder? this dog only lives 7 yrs. Does every second of the rest of his life have to be spent in lonlyness and punishment and incarseration?
for defending him self against unprovoked cruelty? and a home not big enough for him?

  6. My goodness, does he have a bed or something to lay on? This is another example of people who should not be allowed to have a pet.

  7. Where is his facebook thread? I have looked all over the Carson’s website, where we are directed but cannot find him! Thank you!

  8. I don’t see any “unfriendliness” from viewing this video of Gonner, more than likely the dog just got to be more than they wanted to handle so they made up this story as they dumped him at a shelter like “Carson”. Unfortunately for him, he has been dumped at a place where if he doesn’t pass his “temperament” test he will be toast! Sharing and keeping him in our prayers.

    • Think the good thoughts Barkles mom, you got it right the first time.
he has passed all tests and is on his way to a home big enough for all his bigness.he will be romping on a large peice of property with others.
He is being vetted. He is saved. you got real good dog sence.

  9. These so called “owners” (IDIOTS)… should be banned from ever being allowed another pet. You do not just get a dog and let it go. It has to be trained, socialized….LOVED!!
HE IS YOUR FRIEND, YOUR PARTNER YOUR DEFENDER – YOUR DOG. YOU ARE HIS LIFE, HIS LOVE, HIS LEADER. HE WILL BE YOURS FAITHFUL AND TRUE TO THE LAST BEAT OF HIS HEART. YOU OWE IT TO HIM TO BE WORTHY OF SUCH DEVOTION!

  10. Do you really think this dog will languish in a high kill shelter for more then 2 seconds. There are people across the states trying to make deals to get this puppy. This is a valuable great dane under a year old to great dane people he is a the holy grail. dont be fooled,
people are fighting over him behind closed doors.at least they can be trusted with him But they can only get their paws on him if he is spayed at carson. He will go to the person with the most .

  11. Please, please somebody rescue Gonner. I am in New York and he is breaking my heart.
I also don’t understand why he has that face band still on; especially if his muzzle is irritated. The previous owners were heartless and didn’t give this boy a chance. You have to give love to get love………..

  12. Could the shelter please remove that face harness! POS owners obviously don’t want the responsibilities of training and owning Gonner. Is he neutered or not? Any Great Dane Rescues out there?

  13. I live in Massachusetts and plan on calling tomorrow to see if there is a way to transport him out here. I would take him in a heartbeat. And yes they need to take that face harness off and give him cuddles and love!

  14. Not friendly enough????? Whoever had this dog had the brain power of a rock – Great Danes are giant love bugs – Gonner deserved much better and I just read he was adopted – AND ALL animals can and should be spayed/neutered way before three years – I hope he is well and has a forever loving family.

  15. I am trying to adopt Connor but am having a hell of a time getting through on the phone. We had a great dane for 10 years but lost her to cancer a couple of years ago. Great danes are absolutely wonderful pets.

    • Did I miss something? Did they change the name of that cute, freckled dog from that horrible Gonner to Connor? I hope so!
