It's happened again, another dog accidentally euthanized

It’s happened again – a lost pet was accidentally put down at an animal shelter. This time, the tragedy took place at the Harris County Animal Shelter in Houston, Texas. According to Tuesday’s ABC 13 News, Cathy Foster’s two dogs, Chelsea and Diesel, escaped from their yard last Monday.

Foster made arrangements with the shelter to pick up the dogs on Friday, but when she arrived, she discovered that Chelsea had just been accidentally euthanized. Somehow, an employee at the animal shelter grabbed the wrong dog from the kennels – Chelsea paid with her life.

The shelter provided a statement to ABC 13 – a portion reads:

“As a result of this incident, the appropriate employees have been disciplined. I have ordered a review of this event and we will implement additional employee training to prevent this from happening in the future.”

KHOU News reported that Foster’s dogs were temporarily being held at her daughter’s house because her own home had burned down earlier this year. She admitted that the dogs kept getting out of the fenced yard.

The shelter has apologized for the mistake and they are “retraining” employees to ensure that a similar mistake doesn’t happen again.

A similar incident recently claimed the life of a German shepherd who escaped from his yard in South Carolina. Read about that situation here.

    • Right! This “mistake” resulting in DEATH for a pet and GRIEF for the owners. Retrain? Bullshit. Can their asses and they should be charged with negligence. This is happening frequently now. Get rid of these incompetent , uncaring dumbasses. Fine them and charge them. I think they should have to pay restitution to the owners. I hope they sue this shelter.

    • There is only one answer to these “mistakes”, and that is to remove killing of all animals in every shelter all around the world. Nothing less will stop these deaths from happening.

      • I totally agree. There is no good reason to put a dog down. That in itself is cruelty! I tried sharing to help get a healthy dog adopted out only to find out that the shelter put him down yesterday to make room. He was a beautiful healthy boy named King!!! I’m so upset that they didn’t give him a chance to live a good life. I wanted him but I live in a condo.

  1. The shelter apologized for the mistake – that’s not going to bring Chelsea back. I hate that any dog is euthanized in a shelter (unless it’s very, very sick) but one thing is for certain – if you’re taking a life, you had better damn well be sure it’s the right dog. RIP Chelsea. My sincere sympathy to your family.

    • I whole heartedly agree. The pain and loss of a beloved pet is gutwrenching. “Sorry” would do little for my broken heart.

  2. Might be a good idea to train better BEFORE someone’s baby gets put to death. Big deal they got disciplined, meanwhile she is without her baby. I don’t even want to imagine the pain she is suffering.

  3. How hard is it to double check the correct dog that is going to be killed? Two seconds to read to see that the numbers match or the names of the dogs are indeed the correct name. How horrible that such a good dog was killed for someones stupidity.

  4. “The shelter has apologized for the mistake and they are “retraining” employees” I would say too little too late! Why one of these dogs would be “mistakenly” euthanized is unforgivable! The employee that did this needs to be fired not just disciplined! This poor woman lost her home and now one of her dogs, I would be suing this irresponsible shelter! When it comes to “killing” dogs they best be sure what they are doing!

  5. There is no such thing as by accident or oops wrong dog! That isn’t even remotely acceptable! Any shelter that is actively murdering dogs has a obligation to check and double check their kill list! If this had been my dog I can assure you I would have shut that shelter down! You don’t make such mistakes in high kill shelters! If they don’t have trained people then who the hell is murdering the animals?

  6. Why aren’t these shelters double or triple checking which dogs are to put down that day? There should be at least two or more people double checking the dogs and the numbers that are going to be put down that day??? I HATE the idea that KILL SHELTERS still EXIST! I hope someday KILL SHELTERS will be a thing of the past!

  7. Another piss poor excuse by a so called ‘shelter’ whose reputation is in the dumper anyway – maybe they should hire people who can read – there is a lot of blame to go around starting with the management whose lack of communication is prevalent – this whole place needs to be restructured – get rid of the dead beats and find people who CARE about the animals cause that seems to be a major problem in Harris County –
