No one stopped to help street dog hit by car and scrounging to survive

Sylvie had been tossed onto the streets like yesterday’s trash. For months, residents in the San Antonio, Texas neighborhood ignored the street dog who had lacerations all over her body, barely any coat with scabs covering her raging red skin and emaciated body. Still Sylvie scrounged around for food; she so wanted to live and find her way home.

And then the unthinkable happened. Sylvie had not been paying attention to the dangers of the street and was struck by a vehicle – injuring her hind leg so badly, she couldn’t put any weight on it. Still no one stopped to help her; that is until a Good Samaritan spotted her on the streets and called for assistance. Animal Control officers arrived, and Sylvie was brought to the San Antonio Animal Shelter; at the very least she was finally off the streets, given some food and had a safe place to sleep – at least for a few days.

Who would want a nearly bald Border collie mix; a poor suffering dog only one-year-old? That was when animal advocates contacted Stacey Silverstein, co-founder of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC and asked for help:

“As we know, the shelter is not a safe haven and without help from a rescue to save Sylvie, she would not survive,” explained Stacey on Wednesday afternoon after posting the photos of the emaciated and hairless young dog on the rescue organization’s Facebook page. “We saw Sylvie and decided we could not let her suffer another moment and contacted the shelter and agreed to help her – just an innocent puppy who didn’t ask to be disregarded like dirt.”

Sylvie has been transferred to Rescue Dogs Rock NYC partner veterinarian, where for the first time in a long time, Sylvie is being treated with kindness and able to sleep  a full night without fear of being harmed. At this point, Sylvie is listed in critical condition.

  1. What a sad little sight, and you have to wonder how any, kind caring person could ignore this little dog for so long. The truth is her wounds and sickness are self evident, but the sick hearts of those San Antonio residents who saw her little hurt face and form and ignored it, have a different kind of sickness. Shame on them. Blessings on Little Sylvie

  2. Why am I not surprised that this happened in Texas? I am heavily involved in rescue and fostering, and have found over the past three years that Texas is THE worst place for animal neglect/abuse/torture, second ONLY to all the Amish puppy mills in the U.S. For people to ignore this suffering, innocent dog, until she was hit by a car, is appalling, disgusting, and unconscionable! There ought to be a law to charge people with abuse-by-proxy–for knowing about a situation of abuse, yet doing nothing to help. Though there ARE those in Texas who try their best to help animals in neglectful/abusive situations, there are far more who are cruel, heartless, and indifferent to them. The ones in authority who make the laws need to address this epidemic, and DO something to end it!

  3. There’s so many people in this country that have no compassion at all even children! Who has taught them? What goes around comes around, when they are down and out who will help them, nobody! If we would all just treat each other like we would want to treated the world would be a much better place. The Golden Rule is still valid. Please help others whether they are 2 legged or 4 legged!

  4. Texas again? You should all be ashamed of yourselfs I hope someday you need help and no one stops what goes around comes around

  5. Someone should do the USA a favor EXCILE the Cruel, hateful, State of TEXASS to Mexico and let these individuals that have absolutely NO COMPASSION or ETHICAL BOUNDRIES become citizens of Mexico they deserve that environment and government !!! What an awful lot of Trash !!! Rescue Dogs Rock of NY saves another Texas throw away… Do you guys down there have any Self Worth? NOT!!!!!!!

    • O Texas you hold the top spot for having a the lowest form of human population when it comes to helping animals – stand up and get your reward – this state should be sent back to Mexico. Sylvie is only alive because there was one kind caring person who stepped up – must be from out of state. She would be dead if Rescue Dogs Rock NYC – not Texas – came to her rescue. How ANYONE could see her and just ignore her plight is beyond my comprehension –

  6. What the hell is wrong with the people in Texas????? Absolutely no hearts!!!One if the very worst states for homeless animals……Shame on these people????????????

  7. Thank you Rescue Dogs Rock for taking this poor neglected pup under your wing. As for the people who walked by the badly injured dog without a second glance, you really SUCK!

  8. How do people just drive by, walk by….. see an animal in this bad of shape and NOT DO A DAMN thing to help? I will never understand the direction the human race seems to be headed. No compassion for animals at all anymore.
Bless you RDR…. bless you bless you bless you. You are all angels.

  9. So sorry Sylvie, that these humans in San Antonio Texas fail you. I wish I would have been there, I would have taken care of you. Thank the Lord for the person who care and found you a place who will take care of you, wishing you a life of love and care and to those humans who ignored you i wish them no peace in their heart, soul and mind.
