Two men in Daytona Beach, Florida plead no contest on Monday to beating up a Navy veteran who tried to stop the thugs from torturing a turtle at a Daytona Beach apartment complex in February. Garry Blough, 45, had been told by his crying daughter and wife about three men who were killing a turtle; Blough went outside to tell the abusers to stop.
“The one had it over his head and he was smashing it down on the sidewalk,” Blough stated. “I asked them to please leave it alone, just let it go to the lake.”
Not only did Ryan Ponder, 23, Johnnie Beveritt, 18, and a 16-year-old juvenile, ignore the demand to leave the animal alone, they turned their violence to Blough leaving him with a broken skull, facial fractures, internal bleeding and a concussion. The turtle was found dead in a nearby pool of blood.
According to News6, Ponder and Beveritt were sentenced to 18 months probation on the felony count and 12 months probation concurrent on the misdemeanor count. Both men were ordered not to have any contact with each other or wildlife. They were also ordered to take a two day course in anger management and pay $16,500 in restitution. There has been no report as to the punishment for the juvenile involved.
Meanwhile, Blough continues to recover from his injuries which include nerve damage and vision problems. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with the expenses.
