The New York State Police are mourning the loss of K9 Will who was killed in action on Monday. While Trooper Shaun Smith and K9 Will had been helping in the execution of a search warrant at a home in the town on Greig in Lewis County, a dog from the home ran and began an attack on Will.

According to Breaking 911 News, Trooper Smity fired one round from his gun striking the leg of the pit bull that had been attacking will. Apparently the bullet ricocheted off the gravel driveway and struck Will in the stomach. He was rushed to the Countryside Veterinary Clinic and underwent surgery but did not survive.

K9 Will was a three-year-old Belgian Malinois and had been working with the New York State Police since April 2017. He had been named after fallen hero Trooper William G. Doyle who had been shot and killed by an escaped prisoner from a mental institution in 1967.

Rest in peace Will and William. An investigation is currently underway.

  1. K9 Will needed a better handler – Trooper Smity apparently was severely lacking in gun handling. The NY State Police can mourn all they want – they need to train their officers on how to handle a situation like this without resorting to using a gun – ever hear of non-lethal weapons? The only one who needed to be shot was the damn human who set his dog out.

  2. Although obviously unintended, once again a K9 officer is lost at the hands of his ‘handler”….
Much as I detest those who let their animals “off-leash” – I don’t blame the animals themselves, and have often had to wade into fierce engagements to save my own (leashed) companions, while attempting to inflict as little harm as possible on the offending animal.. whenever possible.

That ricochet could just as easily struck the officer himself or another innocent bystander among those coordinating departments…

Stun gun, anyone? At least that option wouldn’t have been as lethal to his own canine partner….

Rest-in-peace, precious Will… and my condolences to your handler, as well: Perhaps your death may give pause to re-evaluate and modify his approach to future situations?

  3. This comes down to the police that seemingly have to “shoot” dogs in order to control them. You would think a K9 officer would be savvy enough to know how to control a “dog fight”, It sounds like Trooper Smity was attempting to hit the pit bull to stop the attack and the attempt tragically backfired. When will the police learn to use alternate ways to stop an attacking dog? Too many family pets and police K9s are dying from gun use. Rest in peace K9 Will, thank you for your faithful service to our New York State, condolences to your handler, family and fellow officers, I know you will be missed.
