Neglected dog rescued from suffering in rural North Carolina shelter

In a rural shelter in Columbus County, North Carolina, a severely injured dog  suffered all weekend. Brought to the shelter’s veterinarian when first found as a stray, the young dog was administered emergency care and given medication. When brought back to the shelter, he was left lying on a cement floor – no rescue organizations came to his aid; poor Linus barely moved – his gums were pale white as maggots moved in and around his face and infected ears. Tragically, like so many other county shelters, there is little funding available for veterinarian care. All they can do is help with emergency care, alert local rescuers and beg for help. Although advocates had no idea how Linus survived the weekend, no one was going to give up on the stray who only wanted to be loved.

On Monday morning, Rescue Dogs Rock NYC were notified about the dog’s precarious situation. Stacey Silverstein, co-founder of the organization immediately jumped into action. Linus was soon to be on his way to the organization’s partner veterinarian for life-saving care. This latest 911 victim of abuse and neglect would be given a second chance:

“Linus is suffering from severe ear infections which have been attacked by maggots,” began Stacey on the group’s Facebook page as she posted the heartbreaking photos and videos of a dog fighting for his life. “He has no front teeth and when found and brought to the shelter, a tooth had been dangling in his mouth and fell out – leaving a huge gaping hole on the inside of his mouth.”

Linus spent the night at the emergency veterinarian.  At this time, his prognosis is unknown, but at the very least the sweet dog has been made comfortable and is receiving the best of care. No matter what happens, Linus will never suffer from neglect or abuse again.

  1. Again, Rescue Dogs Rock to the rescue and more. How do people let a dog get into this condition. If you don’t want him, take him to a shelter before he gets like this.Say you found him wandering the streets, any excuse to get him out of your hands. This so-called owner should have the same thing happen to him/her.

  2. OMG! OMG! I can barely read some of these stories anymore! WHY OR WHY DOESNT OIR SOCIETY WORK TO DO BETTER? God must be cringing

  3. I can’t leave this post without saying once again….THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU RESCUE DOGS ROCK NYC I LOVE THIS RESCUE SO,SO VERY MUCH THEY ARE A SHINING LIGHT IN THE SAD WORLD OF RESCUE!!!! THANK YOU

  4. I am so thankful for Rescue Dogs Rock…..they take on the toughest cases….Does anyone know how this pup is doing now….he looks like a puppy….there are so many people who should not have pets….. how do we stop the madness>

  5. Yes…what possesses people to be so cruel and selfish. How can you look at your pets sweet face everyday and do nothing. I cant even fathom that and never will understand .

  6. Tears. Linus could be a poster dog to show the compassion NYC Rescue Dogs Rock. He is so sweet and gentle even after all he has been through. When adopted he is going to be the most wonderful, devoted family member.

  7. The original shelter is at fault too for letting him be that way all weekend. What goes on in their mind? Were they hoping he would die?

  8. OMG, this is the same shelter my Seiji came from. They used to gas, but are now heartstick, which is almost as bad. When my rescue was still active, I pulled several other amazing dogs from here. But, as you can see in this case, there are too many animals coming in and apparently not enough people to care for them – or even about them. When I adopted Seiji, there was a second, similar looking dog who was extremely emaciated and I was torn between the two. I knew I could only adopt one, but they made the decision for me, killing the emaciated boy a day before their regular kill day. They said he was “sick”, but needing food because whoever had you hasn’t bothered to feed you doesn’t make you sick. Believe it or not, this shelter has actually improved over time, but they are seriously lacking volunteers, too. I’m glad this one made it out. My Seiji was likely abused before (or perhaps even while) being at the shelter. It took me a couple of years to get him over it all. I’m so sick and tired of all these precious souls being dumped at high-kill shelters after not bothering to properly care for them. Too many dogs and cats are dying in shelters, and yet people are still breeding them so they can make a fast buck. I’m sick of it. Thank GOD for groups like Rescue Dogs Rock NYC. They have saved so many who would have continued to suffer until they died on their own or were killed by the shelter they were at.

  9. Rescue Dogs Rock is freaking brilliant. God Bess al you all angels, but also all the other rescue out there who spend a fortune of time and energy and love on these precious creatures, and so often help them from neglect or abuse or even institutional abuse. PLEDGERS AND DONATORS they cannot do it without you ~~ Thank you too!! And crossposters well that is also a great gift of time and love and hours and energy. THE ONE THING THAT IS NEEDED TO MAKE SO MANY MORE DOGS SAFE IS FOSTERS AND ADOPTERS. Please, each one reach one and we will help them all! <3

  10. If it weren’t for Rescue Dogs Rock NYC Linus would be dead – they save so many dogs that shelters are only way to quick to kill, , some as inhumanely as possible – the state governments waste millions of dollars every year – it is time they start funneling some of this money to animal shelters who need $$$ to help animals instead of killing them. This whole country should be ashamed of they way animals are treated in this day and age. They are victims of horrendous cruelty by humans.
