In Oceanside, California a Navy veteran has been accused by police of poisoning and torturing his neighbors’ dogs including gouging one of a dog’s eye out and dousing others with acid. On Wednesday, authorities arrested David Herbert, 36, and charged him with burglary, vandalism, animal cruelty and using a deadly weapon.
According to News10, authorities allege Herbert went to his next door neighbor’s home in April and tortured the family’s two Huskies; one dog lost his eye. The other dog suffered acid burns both inside and outside of its body. The owners believe an intruder tried to force them out of their home. The family moved to another home, however the two dogs of the new tenants went missing one month later. One of their dog’s was found roaming the neighborhood. Police believe Herbert had injured or killed their other dog. Lala, the family’s golden retriever has never been found. That family also moved away.
Fox5San Diego described the owners of the dogs had reported at least four vandalism and animal cruelty incidents at the home on Carino Way.
DNA from one of the dogs hasbeen found in Herbert’s car along with items of value recovered in Herbert’s home. A baseball bat also revealed DNA evidence from one of the dogs.
Herbert was honorably discharged from the Navy after six years of service.
Herbert is currently being held at Vista Detention Facility on $1 million bail.

Our military lowered its standards during the Bush years to fight wars on 2 fronts, and, unfortunately, too many people like this are finding their way in. I’m certain I’m not the only person here to notice how many psycho military people we see on this and other sites who take pleasure in abusing their pets. Don’t get me wrong: I still believe most of our military people are honorable. However, there are others, just like with cops, who are attracted to that life, and that’s what they’re no longer weeding out.
I hope this guy gets what he deserves sooner rather than later and is locked up for as long as possible. This monster should not be allowed out on the streets— EVER.
Being a former navy man the military hasn’t lowered its standard. Its the use of technology that has exposed these assholes. The military has had its share of bad people for years way before the Bush years.

yeah, the judges seem to lack a backbone (and /or heart) in these animal torture cases. SHOCKING to me. Can’t understand the lack of empathy for victims and lack of ANGER towards perpetrators! I guess we would all be considered too extreme, but obviously we all want to give the death penalty to them! And we would sleep good at night knowing animals ( and people) would be safer without them on the planet!

Absolutely no excuse or reason for this inhumane torture, but what was his reasoning besides being crazy?Jail is to good for something like this and must have done to him, what he did to all these dogs, and possibly more that were never recorded or found.Can’t always stand behind being a war veteran because there are a lot who have emotional issues when their tour of duty is up, and they don’t commit any crimes.Put him in jail with all the animal lovers and see what happens.
