Murphy, a neutered brown and white Labrador retriever – barely two-years-old is scheduled to die at 1:00 Tuesday afternoon at the Brooklyn Center’s New York City Animal Care Center. Let down terribly by humans, every bone in his back is visible, and there’s so much more to this young dog’s story:
“Here we go again! You can see every bone protruding through his thin layer of skin, clearly starving and left alone with a child and peanut butter filled Kong, who tried to take it out of his mouth! Then this child was allowed to scream in his face and grab his collar to push him off the couch! But he was also failed by NYCACC who adopted him to a family in the first place (4 and 6 yr old children) who had NO CLUE about the responsibility that goes along with owning a dog,” explained a shelter volunteer.
Sadly, Murphy was set up to fail. He had just been adopted three weeks prior, but to a family who had no experience with dogs nor did his new family teach their new dog how to interact with very active children. Indeed, Murphy was sweet, wiggly, friendly and affectionate, but the playful pup hadn’t been taught any manners; nor were the children taught how to respect a dog’s space – at least until he acclimated to his family.
Most likely given the proper introductions, Murphy would have been a perfect partner and would not be on today’s list to die. A volunteer offers the following observation:
“You don’t let children hang on them, pull things out of their mouth or in this case ‘scream’ in the poor dogs face and order them off the sofa! Murphy was probably VERY confused and freaked out. Let’s face it, the bottom line was that Murphy was not set up to ‘win.” And he is so darn lovable, and has a sterling resume of skills too. He deserved a wonderful family who understand ‘new pet basics.’ Murphy is house trained, crate trained, well behaved home alone. He was relaxed and respectful with these children, ages 4 and 6. He would jump on visitors to give them a kiss. And he was a good boy on walks – never pulling on his leash. He even knew ‘sit’ and ‘come.’ He’s even respectful of other dogs. He got stellar scores on his safer, and he’s an all around good boy. Please don’t let the failure of his adoptive parent mean the end of his life.”

Bride ditches traditional wedding flowers, carries rescue pups instead – adorable!
Nurturing dog takes on orphaned piglets as her own
I fault the shelter system, sometimes they are so anxious to adopt out a dog that they will let anyone adopt and just take the chance. It’s not fair to the dog or the adopting family. We also need more no kill shelters in this country! I know it’s not an easy job but the rewards are great! Come on people advocate!
Perfectly said!
Please save this dog for a mature family in a loving home. His life matters.
Please update.
Come on rescues. Give him more time. Not his fault the owners were neglectful. They should be charge for abuse.why havent they?
I agree with you, but most people don’t value animals. This family clearly did not value Murphy. He was starving and they let their children torment him. The parents are assholes raising two more.
I have room and could foster this treasure
It’s heartbreaking that I am in CA, with an orchard that this treasure would love……
I hope he survives the shelter and finds a new furever home where he will be a beloved and treasured family member……..
Can I foster Murphy if no one else has asked for him?
Kathleen, call the shelter and let them know you are willing to foster and hopefully its not too late.
Why are you asking just call them. You’re obviously not that serious.
Please he should not have to die
ASSHOLES!!!! SAVE HIM!!!
Kathleen, call the shelter and let them know you are willing to foster and hopefully its not too late.
Facebook link does not work. Is Murphy safe?
The Facebook page for this dog is down. I fear the worst. Anyone have an update? Good news preferred!

Do not murder this fur baby!!!
I’ll take Murphy
What happened to Murphy?????
Marsha I fear the worst. Brooklyn ACC kills dogs within 18 hrs if no one takes an interested in adopting them.
