Thoroughbreds, trying to flee wind-driven wildfires in San Diego County, California, were killed as the flames and smoke blanketed the area. According to multiple sources, elite racing horses at the San Luis Rey Downs facility were set free on Thursday – a desperate attempt to save them from the unthinkable.

Despite the effort to save the horses, an estimated two (plus) dozen perished in the fire, reported the Los Angeles Times. Some horses were so confused, frightened and disoriented by the smoke that they wouldn’t even come out of their stalls, reported ESPN. Cliff Sise, a horse trainer, told the news agency about one horse who refused to leave, “It was dark, everything was hot and she wouldn’t come out. I opened the pen and tried to get behind her and get her out, and she wouldn’t get out. She burned to death that quick.”

Though current estimates put the number of deaths at the facility at 25, there are concerns that the number could be much, much higher.

  1. I pray for the safety of these horses. I don’t understand why the facility didn’t start evacuating the horses sooner.

RIP for all the horses that perished in the fire.

    • The fire moved quickly. The wind is horrible and a fire can start and change directions quickly. I’m sure the people there tried their best to save them.

  2. Really???
With all the active fire – high wind forecasts – they COULDN’T FORESEE THIS TRAGEDY IN THE MAKING, and – planning ahead – MOVE THESE HAPLESS SOULS???
    Disgusting!

    • I agree….talk about piss poor planning. I would have taken my animals and been gone the first minute that they talked about the fires.

  3. They had warnings about this earlier and should have had several plans in effect to save these horses. Why, when everything is in confusion, did they just release these horses to fend for themselves. These facilities should have several plans in place if/when these fires take over an area. Could have transported horses to other areas to save their lives teporarily.

  4. It’s so easy for you to judge them from your comfortable homes behind your computers. Try going out into the real world and see how fast things happen. I survived the Santa Rosa fires two months ago and I will never look at the wildfires the same way. I have lost friends and one family member. And so many more lost their homes. Try not to be so judgmental. The people there are suffering enough without having mop judge them and their actions during a true emergency.

    • What a horrible thought. And shame on you for even suggesting this. Next you will say that started the fires to collect insurance.

  5. STOP and Think Here:::: BIG TIME INSURANCE MONIES POSSIBLY INVOLVED.. IN amounts much Higher then the Horse is REALLY PROBABLY WORTH!!!! Good God We have four horses and one mule and we have a Plan in case something of this sort should happen in our rural area!!! a horse trailer is here at all times, extra halters, in our shop, sweet feed , to coach them into the trailer… WE love all our animals.. we would never leave them… they are common quarter horses… without millions of dollars of insurance… Just hide and watch what is paid out to these ruthless scum…on the loss of lives that could have been saved….

    • Why am I not surprised that you would be fueling the fires about this being an insurance scam. You prove with every post how unhappy and angry you are. Sad.

      • And you apparently live in “La LA LAND” there is no Alice and Yes, things like this most certainly do happen My Dear. I am a realist as the people in the other posts stated why in the hell didn’t this organization have a plan for escape … have there not been numerous fires out of control out there. This is a FOR PROFIT Corporation !!! Very much the same as Greyhound racing… look what THEY do to their animals that do NOT preform as expected and not Winners… Not all these beautiful Equines are winners either!!! Also Look at the news where a Equine facility had numerous modes of transportation available, horses haltered, people Even Newscasters, helping get the horsed loaded. No Alice this is not Wonderland

      • look how many DID get their horses out in trailers… EVEN the CNN news crew helped to load up numerous horses… The individuals that has this boarding facility HAD a Plan. This was shown to thousands of people watching the news. they had horses tied to the corrals with halters, and blindfolds to keep them somewhat calm… Why couldn’t a massive corporation have not developed a plan for their INVESTMENT ( the million dollar race horses) is beyond me!!! Rightfully SO TOO!!!

  6. I came out of the womb crying for a horse. They are my heart. This is too horrible to see. I know the security of their stall is where they want to be. It is well know a horse will run back into a burning barn to the only place they know, in their mind, is safe. RIP to God’s most beautiful creatures. I know your people are suffering greatly from your loss.

  7. Did you see the news yesterday of the facility That had Dozens of Horse trailers leading horses with halters, covered eyes, out of their facility while the barns were burning… Even the cameramen and the anchor were helping!!! They were making every effort to moved out their Equines!!! Why the Hell would a huge Racing Corporation NOT have help, mobility , to move these MILLION DOLLAR HORSES!!! Sort of Strange I would Say… after all these horses are their livelihood.. Gambling !!!! YUP STRANGE!!!
