Miami Beach man who beat beagle puppy to death sentenced to probation

A Miami Beach, Florida man accused of dragging a beagle puppy to her death across a parking lot and beating her with a leash while slamming her to the hard road will not be doing any jail time. Last week, Mathew Milewski accepted a plea deal calling for one year of probation and a fine.

According to the Miami Herald, the plea deal was offered by Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Yvonne Colodny and not by prosecutors. Under the terms of the deal, Milewski, 29, will not have a felony conviction on his record and will be required to pay $1,000 as a donation to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The case had been mired in legal ramifications after it was ruled that law enforcement officers violated Milewski’s rights in seizing the dead puppy’s remains from an animal clinic without a search warrant. The ruling suppressed key evidence in the case which included the results of the necropsy on the puppy’s death and testimony from the veterinarian who examined the dead puppy.

The case was then appealed, and in 2016, the court agreed with the prosecutors that Milewski “abandoned his expectation of privacy in the puppy’s remains” when he left the dead dog at the clinic, however jurors were not made aware of the puppy’s medical records.

Molly was a four-month-old beagle who died in November 2011, one day after Milewski purchased the seven-pound puppy from a breeder. When he brought the severely injured dog to a Miami Beach veterinary clinic the next day, he told the staff the dog had bitten him as he tried to clean her paw and then he dropped her in the shower. According to eyewitnesses, earlier that day, Milewski had dragged the puppy spread-eagle across the parking lot of his condo building until she bled, and beat and slammed her with the leash against the pavement. A valet attendant told police her heard a “loud scream from a dog” and saw Milewski violently beating the defenseless pup. Milewski was charged with animal cruelty

“Dogs don’t become extremely obedient with rainbows and sugarplums,” Milewski told police after he explained he had trained another beagle named Macy in a “very aggressive” manner.

Milewski denied that he was beating the dog and stated he was following directions from a shock collar he had purchased for his puppy to train her. Experts agreed Molly likely died of from brain injury due to head trauma. The puppy had bruising on her mouth and nostrils indicating she also could have been smothered. The other dog Macy was also initially seized by Animal Control, but returned to her owner, who had been Milewski’s significant partner. The two reportedly split up.

Rest in peace Molly. We are sorry that you never had a chance at life.

What kind of BS is this? Why didn’t the valet and eyewitnesses call police while he was dragging and beating the pup and why did this monster even want a dog? The punishment they have handed this POS is NOTHING and worse yet I see nowhere that says he cannot own another dog! How can a judge make a ruling like this! Until our judicial system starts taking this seriously, thugs like this will continue to abuse helpless puppies. I’m so sorry Molly that there will be no justice for you!

Barkley’s Mom I also don’t understand why nobody called the authorities. Shit how can you not after witnessing such horrific acts on an animal? No one would certainly not hesitate to call if the victim was human! I also question his real motives of adopting this dog…….perhaps an animal serial killer? Because of his history of dog abuse I am shocked that not being allowed to own an animal wasn’t imposed. Judge Yvonne Colodny should be ashamed of herself!

You are so right linda, Judge Yvonne Colodny should be ashamed to be called a judge and step down. She certainly hasn’t got any sense of justice and her coming up with this plea deal after this monster murdered that little pup is disgusting!

When are the judges going to start taking animal abuse seriously ? are they waiting for them to move on to humans ? that judge makes Me sick!!!!!!!

I was thinking the same thing. I would have immediately dialed 911 and then hopefully had the courage to go grab that puppy away from that monster.

RIP Molly. I’m sorry your death was in vain. This POS got a slap on the wrist. For God’s sake, there were WITNESSES to Molly’s torture. WTH is wrong with our judicial system when it protects the criminals instead of the defenseless victims?

This is the typical out come of cases involving abuse! The law has to catch up with and be stiffened! This puppy died a horrific death at the hands of this jackass! There should have been no doubt in the judges mind or that of any one else as to why this baby died! But this is the sad way the law treats abusers of animals they get a slap on the wrist! Most times there is no justice at all! As a veterinarian and a person who fights for the rights of animals each and every day this angers me! Penalties must be stiffened! This person didn’t even blink! To him the puppy was a punching bag! Really? The puppy bit him? It was a beagle puppy!

Not to make little of Molly’s death, but animal abusers often go on to abusing and even killing people. He should be watched for any future abusive behavior. I hope that people who live near him will monitor his behavior long after his probation is over.

I read in another article that the vet had him leave the office with the injured Molly because to go to another animal hospital to get X-rays for her. The machine at the first hospital was broken.. He said to the vet that he dropped her in the shower. Then, the experts say, he smothered Molly to death in his car and returned with the body to the first animal hospital. Then, the next day, his neighbor called the police when she heard Molly was dead. And there were two witnesses to the abuse in the apartment complex parking lot. If just one person picked up their phone.

Since his picture is posted, might I suggest some puppy loving people in Florida pay him a visit and oops, drop him in the shower, muzzle his nose and mouth with plastic so he can’t breathe and beat him to death in a very slow slowwwww purposeful (always trying to revive him) manner. That way we know there will never be any other animals to suffer at his hands and it saves the courts a lot of money. Also, these kind of creeps turn into Jeffrey Dahmers. Check the records, most sociopaths start with abusing animals.

THIS is why the sale of purebred dogs is so wrong. Anyone can buy one. Adoptions of dogs has more rigorous vetting of the potential owner and tends to screen out nuts like him. Poor baby. ????

In the name of God, what is wrong with the legal system! If in the future this mongrel kills a child it is the law that is just as guilty for giving such a weak pathetic sentence. Animal abusers are psychopathic sadists! Unless this is fully recognised these sweet defenceless souls will suffer at the hands of these POS!!!

This POS mills o r puppy and you give him another dog to torture!!! Now which one is the sick one??? This sicko needed jail time and life time ban on animals. The judge should be ashamed of herself for such a disgusting sentence. Cases like this should not have any “plea deals” whatsoever. This was premeditated MURDER. Give the juries ALL the facts. He did it now let him face the penalties. Shameful

He should be put on the PET ABUSE REGISTRY regardless of what the judge says. It is a felony and should be noted on his record somewhere. This isn’t a one time thing for this kid. He got away with it this time, he WILL do it again.
