In “An open letter to the man who made fun of my dog,” a proud dog parent addressed a mean-spirited passer-by who laughed at the appearance of her dog  – a dog who had survived eight years of having been a victim of a puppy mill and used repeatedly for breeding until she was finally rescued.

The photo of Lulu appeared on Imgur.com and related an incident when a person,

“who almost fell down laughing and posed the question ‘What the *f-word* is that thing?’ as I was carrying Lulu into the pet store to get a new harness.”

Lulu’s human openly admits admits her dog has a funny look, but why be so mean? Does it make all of us wonder what this person would say to a parent of a child?

“I wished you hadn’t ducked into the diner so quickly once you realized that I heard you,” Lulu ‘s owner writes. “I wasn’t mad. I’m not naive, nor am I stupid. I know Lulu has a silly little face. She makes me laugh every day.”

This had been Lulu’s first trip out of the house besides veterinarian visits:

“It was a big trip for both of us. I wish you would have asked to see her or pet her so I could have told you about her. I could have educated you about puppy mills and animal abuse. You would have seen how sweet she is. You would have understood that Lulu looks the way she does because of 8 years of neglect and abuse. And that isn’t funny.”

Lulu’s owner pointed out that Lulu, despite all the mistreatment she has had to endure, she is still an extraordinarily kind dog:

“Not that you should be sad. I personally find it inspiring that after all she’s been through she isn’t mean. It’s amazing to me that every day she trusts me a little more; and that simply being able to finally pet her, after a hear and a half, fills me with so much joy.”

Lulu isn’t the first special needs dog this amazing rescuer has welcomed into her home and her heart either:

“i would have told you about how she initiated my love and desire to care for senior and special needs dogs. And that once I realized that she needed a companion, I met my best friend Cas, a senior dog who happens to be missing a leg. And how adopting Cas introduced me to the rescue group that I now foster for. She started me on a journey that I never imagined for myself, and that’s pretty cool. It makes me smile!”

And at the end of Lulu’s owner open letter, there was a thank you:

“So thank you, somewhat rude guy, for reminding me how lucky I am. I’m sorry you didn’t get to meet Lulu. What knows what wonderful things she might have inspired YOU to do.”

The letter was signed “????”

  1. Please consider the source – a bottom of the barrel asshole who needs to take a good look in the mirror before he makes fun of any other being. I think this lady was too kind – he deserves a sack of dog shit dumped on his car. Lulu is beautiful and anyone who has the audacity to say anything different needs a brain scan ASAP.

  2. The owner of this wonderful and lucky to be alive is a CARING, LOVING and COMPASSIONATE REAL HUMAN BEING !!! something our Country is lacking of in this day and age…. Enjoy your little gire and don’t give a second thought to the Butt Wipe who made the rude and needless comment. HE IS A MORONIC BEING!!!

  3. Kuddoes to the person that adopted this sweet dog! I wonder what the person would have said about the child that has down syndrome or was burned in a fire and had reconstructive surgery, or has anything wrong with them. Just remember God put all of us on the earth because we all have a job to do and only HE knows that job and nobody is perfect even you!

    • No doubt he would, but have you ever noticed that most of the people who make comments as disgusting as this jerk aren’t exactly pin-ups themselves?

      • You are so right maxiemom, years ago I dumped a “portly” boyfriend because I got sick of him making rude remarks about overweight women. It was the pot calling the kettle black and I let him know it!

  4. Stupid, ignorant man to make fun of a dogs appearance without knowing anything about her. Wonder how he would feel if he were walking down the street with his child (if he were lucky to even have any), and someone laughed or made fun of the way his son/or daughter walked or talked? The freedom to say what we want does have negative affects that can be really hurtful, which is what this jerk said. The person who adopted this dog wrote exactly what most loving dog owners feel. You do a great job!

  5. Insensitivity and rudness seems to be running rampant. I don’t know what ever happened to “if you can’t say something nice then don’t say anything at all”. I was raised on that saying and raised my children the same way. The worse part is this moron probably does the same thing to parents of a human child. I would like to see what HE looks like and how superior HE is to be able to laugh and make fun of others. To Lulu’s pet parent, you have a beautiful girl there, I see nothing funny about her, I would have stopped and commented on what a treasure she is. Thank goodness all of us aren’t insensitive jerks!

    • Well said Barkley’s Mom. I agree 1000%. Society has changed, in many ways, not all for the better. I only see a beautiful dog that is getting all the love she deserves. Lulu has a purpose that was lost on the loser funny guy.

  6. I’m with Barkley’s Mom. I was raised to be respectful toward people I don’t know and those I do (until that moment when people have EARNED something else) and raised by son to be the same. Manners matter. It sickens me when I see how many Philistines there are walking about this country this day, especially when this nation is represented by one so despicable. When did it become okay to look at anyone and make rude comments like that? When did this society become so coarse and common (hint: look at Rush Limbaugh for answers….). The scumbag who laughed at sweet little Lulu probably laughs at kids in wheelchairs, disabled kids, and anyone who looks strange to him. I’m glad there are people out there like Lulu’s mom who understand that looks aren’t everything: it’s HEART that counts. That guy clearly is a big fat zero in everything that matters.

  7. I think that is the sweetest little face…….thank you for writing that letter….. People should be as loving, compassionate and sweet as animals!
