A dog is alive today – thanks to the bravery of a man who ran into a burning home in Haysville, Kansas. According to the Wichita Eagle, Kyle Berger, a city of Haysville employee, was driving on Friday when he came upon a house fire on Spencer Drive.
Berger immediately ran to the home – banging on windows and doors to see if anyone was still inside. When Berger went around back, he found a door unlocked. Though flames were were shooting out of the windows, Berger didn’t hesitate to open the door and rush inside.
Thanks to his bravery, a dog who was inside, locked in a kennel, was saved. Berger grabbed the cage and rushed the dog outside to fresh air and safety. Berger told the news agency that the dog was scared, but happy to see him – thankfully, thanks to the good Samaritan’s quick actions, the dog made it through the frightening situation unharmed.
Berger is no stranger to fires…in fact, he has over a decade of experience working as a volunteer firefighter. No people were injured in the fire, but the house did suffer extensive damage and a pet bird may have died.

I do not mean to throw cold water on a feel good story; however, how did he know there was a dog locked in a kennel in there? Did he just “take a chance” that a dog or human might be there? I’m normally not a suspicious person but I remember reading another fire story about a supposed passerby who ran into the house and saved a pet’s life….turns out that the so-called hero had actually started the fire and then he looks like a hero. I hope that’s not the case in this story.
He is a volunteer firefighter….so wouldn’t he know what to do?
