A 54-year-old Florida man was arrested after 13 dogs were found living in an SUV in Florida. According to the Miami Herald, Frank La Peruta, the dogs’ owner, told an animal control officer that “he could not rely on anyone to properly care for the dogs in Okeechobee, as he worked in Islamorada, and decided to bring them with him.”

The dogs were discovered in an Chevy Equinox which was parked at a business in Islamorada  – Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies went to investigate the vehicle after hearing barking. The SUV was strewn with feces, food and urine…but there was only one small bowl of water for the over one dozen dogs, reported Buzzfeed.

After investigators visited a one-acre property in Okeechobee and found cats locked in a shed, as well as numerous neglected horses and dogs, 14 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty were filed against Peruta, who is scheduled to appear in court in mid-November.

All of the dogs were taken to an animal shelter for care. On Sunday, the Upper Keys Animal Shelter alerted it’s Facebook followers to the dogs on Sunday:

These are the 13 dogs found in an SUV in Islamorada, dubbed the Fish Co. 13! There were 11 smaller dogs, mostly terrier types and they’re all adorable little fuzzies. There were also two larger dogs, both are Boxer mixes (Boxer/Pitt and Boxer/English Bulldog) and are very loving.

The dogs will be made available for adoption after they have been fully vetted. Interested adopters can visit the Upper Keys Animal Shelter or call on 305-451-0088.
