A man, who was said to be “was obsessed with snakes, spiders, and birds,” was apparently killed by one of his pet snakes. According multiple sources, 31-year-old Dan Brandon was found dead from asphyxiation in his home in Church Crookham, Southern England.

One of Brandon’s pet pythons was found loose in the same room. According to the Telegraph, the authorities believe that the python crushed Brandon. On a fundraiser set up by Brandon’s friend, his love of all animals was noted:

We have struggled when looking for photos for his funeral to find any when he isn’t holding a spider, snake, small bird, toad, slow worm, hedgehog, feeding a fox, stroking cattle, befriending a cat or dog so these charities seemed the perfect choice.

The situation is still being investigated, but at this point in time, Brandon’s death is not considered to be suspicious.

  1. I can understand people who have an interest in snakes/reptiles, but, a python as a pet confuses and causes me to be concerned. I’ve heard of people owning them along with their dogs. Trouble can always occur for both owner and pets.

    • Hi Tina, let me put your mind at ease. There are many species of python and most don’t grow that big, and here’s a few statistics for you too, According to the National Office of Statistics around 25 people each year are killed directly by animals. Of the 25 directly related animal deaths in the UK, the top 5 killers are:

      1. Horses: about 10 a year

      2. Cows: about 5 a year

      3. Domestic dogs: about 4 per year

      4. Bees & Wasps: about 3 per year

      5. Deer –attacks about 1 per year.
Total number of people killed by pythons in the uk over the last 100 years – zero.
Seriously nothing for you to worry about.

      • Claire thank you for the info. Perhaps I should do research pertaining to the U.S. However, we don’t know the fatalities that occur between pythons and furry pets since they probably haven’t been documented nor exposed. If a family had pet cats/dogs killed by their python pets do you think they would admit it? .
