A maggot-infested dog, tied to a utility trailer in Sarasota, Florida, had to be euthanized after being abandoned. According to CBS 12 News, a couple is facing charges for moving away and leaving the elderly dog to suffer and die.
The 14-year-old terrier mix named Spunik was discovered by a good Samaritan on June 5 – the dog was found to be emaciated, blind, deaf and in “extreme distress” After being discovered, Spunik was transported to a veterinarian and humanely euthanized.
The people accused of leaving Spunik to die are 55-year-old Joseph Shepherd and 62-year-old Diana Harrelson. Harrelson, who was arrested and charged with aggravated animal cruelty, told deputies that she didn’t have the funds to pay for Spunik to be euthanized and she wanted him to “die a natural death.”
Harrelson’s boyfriend, Joseph, is facing charges for abandoning an animal to die and animal cruelty. The couple owned a second dog (Bella) who was impounded by animal services – the dog was suffering from parasites and fleas. Bella will likely be transferred to the care of a rescue agency.
